based on winning percentage at current school Les Miles---.850 Carroll-----.844 Tressel----.820 Meyer-----.795 Richt------.791 Les is the best college football coach around. hands down. carroll is close on winning% but he plays in a pansy conference. and boise state doesnt count. give that man another raise.:milesmic::geauxtige:crystal::tigereye::usaflagwa
All Due Respect, Les Miles is an ELITE coach. So are the others. Personally, I obviously prefer Tressel, but this stat is somewhat misleading. Doesn't take into account the number of games, or records elsewhere (sorry, I believe these to be highly relevant, because it illuminates what coaches can do with what is generally lesser talent from whichever school they worked their way up from). Also doesn't take into account other off the field issues, which I feel are every bit as relevant. Grades, arrests, community service, etc. While this may or may not be relevant to everyone, not really the point, I guess. All of these coaches have a ways to go in their careers yet, no doubt they all have left their marks, and most will likely end up in the CFB HOF. It is a bit in the moment, and coaches go on hot and cold streaks, time will tell who was the best. It is a different conversation altogether as to who's the hottest at the moment, and as the defending NC, Miles definitely stakes a legitimate claim. End of Rant...
anybody can tailor a stat to make someone or something look the best. Remember, there are lies, damn lies, and statistics. Les Miles is a fantastic coach and we're lucky to have him but I wouldn't say he's the greatest college coach ever, that's just crazy talk at this stage of his career.
I was expecting to see names like Joe Pa, Bowden Sr., and cough, cough - Bear Bryant. All those coaches listed still have a good 10-20 years left in most of them.
This thread title is misleading... "EVER" is a strong word and brings about names such as... Bear Bryant Knute Rockne Barry Switzer Tom Osbourne Bobby Bowden Joe Paterno Eddie Robinson etc.... If Les wins a few more crystal trophies and sticks around for 20 more years... I could see him being up there one day.
bryant--76% rockne--88% but there was little competition and he was born in norway (socialist) switzer-82.6% osbourne-83% bowden--77% paterno--74% robinson---puhleeze 69% les is more.:milesmic::geauxtige:tigereye::usaflagwa
I agree that the word "Ever" makes this thread difficult. But the word "greatest" has problems too, which is where the Eddie Robinson stat falls out. Robinson was clearly a great coach. Winningest? No. But greatness over a career doesn't require the best W/L record. Did you include Miles' record at OSU?
What Robinson did at Grambling was pretty damn special. I would say he should be mentioned in the top 5 of all time. At this time CLM is not even in the top ten greatest of all time.
I wholeheartedly agree. Eddie Robinson was, indeed, very special and should be included on a list of best evers.
