I agree with almost all of the grading and most of the comments except for the knucklehead that thinkswe were terrible. And like Red noted the Aussie needs to improve. The corners did well in tackling when coming in from the outside but were poor when they had to move outside, they took bad angles. Mills disappointed me the most.
Speaking of bad angles, somebody did bring up the play Loston took the absolute worst angle. Kid does not play "smart". He is too aggressive and doesn't think enough on the field. He needs to correct that, otherwise Georgia, Ole Miss, Alabama and A&M will exploit that all day long.
I'm really concerned about the defense. There are regular breakdowns at every level that cause gaps in run and pass coverage. Had this been Ga it would have been a 56-53 game. I like Hunter and Ego on D line and Allen at times. I don't know where Freak is but he hasn't been the force we need. Maybe he is getting doubled but I didn't see much. Rasco is also sometimes there but often not. The LBs need to put the best players in position. Welter is not the MLB we need. We should move Barrow into the middle and hopefully Tahj Jones, Deon Jones, Kwon and Beckwith will step up. It seemed that White should be the RCB and we are better with out Losten. What I saw last night won't stand against SEC offenses and we will depend on the O this year. I do believe Chief can make the adjustments but we have only one maybe 2 weeks to figure and straighten it out.
After watching a bunch of games the past two weeks I think just about every team has a bunch of issues trying to corral these high powered offenses, there are all kinds of break downs in every game. Heck our D has had them every season even when we had top 5 defenses. So I don't think we need to get too worked up yet. We've put tons of guys in the nfl off of our defense the past several years and we still have had many games where end gave up a lot of yards and/or points. These offenses today are hard as heck to contain for 4 quarters.
I will agree with cajdav on the fact that offenses are getting more innovative and harder to stop. So a team like UAB, while not someone that could challenge us, still has an offense with weapons that can hurt you. Kent State will probably be a different issue. They have averaged only 19.5 ppg and 330 yards against the likes of Liberty U. and Bowling Green. If we don't dominate that game defensively as I said earlier, then I think the concern level will rise.
As good as he played in the first game, this one was bad. He said it himself after the game on his play.
The defense worries me somewhat after two weeks. We aren't really giving up a ton of yards, per se, but allowing the scores bothers me. I was, however, VERY happy that our reserves did not allow that last TD and made a great goal line stand on 4 and a very short 1. Our inexperience shows on D. Just as our inexperience shows on D, it's amazing what having a seasoned QB is doing with experience WRs and RBs. We can actually participate in shoot-outs this year, and if it comes to that at UGA, I like our chances.
Defense kind of reminds me of 2008. Lots of talent, but they appear to be fundamental breakdowns and players out of position or taking bad angles. Let's hope this is not the case. The main difference now is we have a DC who can correct the problems before it bites us in the ass.
