QB: C- If I'm strictly grading his actual passes, it would have graded out to a D. But he did keep drives alive with a few really good instinctual runs up the middle after not finding his intended target (singular) open. But ultimately this position is being played at an inept level and is very concerning. Bama had 8 or 9 in the box on about 75 % of the first down and favorable running down and distances. LSU rarely took advantage of the passing friendly matchups. Jennings did suffer from a couple of key 3rd down conversion drops by Quinn. Les Miles speaks of a "special season", but ultimately will never achieve it with Jennings at QB. RB: B+ Excellent results based on how Bama was stacking the box and yet our running backs had good results. WR: C- A great catch by Dupre (actually two of them but one TD was nullified due to being out of bounds by a couple of inches) was coupled with a couple of huge key drops by Quinn. Unbelievably the most sure handed receiver on this team could not haul in a pass last night. It was a sad sight. TE/FB: B- Still no factor in the passing game (save the one first down conversion by the FB), but was terrific in run blocking and pass protection. OL: B+ Again, based on Bama stacking the box, it was quite a task for LSU to run as well as they did. Jennings was protected very well for almost the entire night when dropping back to pass. DL: B+ Another great outing by this unit. Devon Godchaux will be the next great DT at LSU. Hunter is going in the first round of the NFL draft. Pro scouts are salivating about this kid. He will make for an excellent 3-4 OLB. LB: B Another unit that has made great strides in the past few weeks had another solid outing. Everyone saw the huge drop off in this defense once Beckwith left the field. It was alarming. DB: A Exceptional play by arguably the best secondary in the nation. It took 59 minutes for the Bama QB to complete a pass in the air for over 10 yards in length. That's astounding. ST/K: C- Inconsistent punting, a punt return team that allowed a 70+ yard net punt to occur, and the death nail kick out of bounds haunted these units and ending up being very costly. Coaching: B Went toe to toe with arguably the hottest team in the country. Just could not get it done, ultimately. Until this coaching staff puts more stock into being a balanced offense, you will end up with more results like we did last night. You cannot continue to depend on a defense giving up only 7 points in order to win a game. The concern here is that as long as the results are satisfactory (not being blown out, the QB not turning the ball over), the status quo will continue to live on with a run heavy, passing inept offense. Not good.
QB and WR get a D. OL and RB get an A, no way you could ask them to do anything more running into those stacked fronts. I've never seen a defense play both safeties so close to the line of scrimmage for a such a large portion of the game.
It was pretty sad that once we got called for that senseless 15 yard penalty near the goal line that every LSU fan knew that the best result was going to be a FG.
I'm in tune with these grades. I'd drop receivers to D though. Quinn dropped 2 first downs that could have gotten big yards, but he is afraid over the middle. Dupree dropped a 1st on a slant, and didn't have the wherewithal to not run out of bounds on a TD. LB's and Secondary get A's save the TD in the 2nd by Alabama where Jalen Collins got bitched by Cooper, then stiff armed to china at the goal line, and Bama's last drive, you tackle in in bounds you end the game. But it wouldn't have mattered because half this board still would bitched their eyeballs out because our "coach and qb" suck.
One other zebra gift was the OPI on the gump TD in OT. It was just like the one called against ND. There was no attempt to run a route just block the DB.
i dont think the dbs deserved an A. their passing game sucked almost as bad as ours. dropped passes, bad throws. we left cooper uninhibited any time he went in motion or was stacked behind another wr. he ran clean much too often. and often times we trailed far behind. luckily they rarely took advantage. def backs get a B- from me. also its death knell.
Fairly accurate and balanced grading, I think. I might drop the plusses and minuses and just leave them with the letter grades which seem about right.
