You reminded me of a Michigan St. fan who visited a rival LSU board 9 or so years ago. Said we would usually be happy with Saban, but he would cost us a game we should win virtually every year.
Here's another good quote from that event: "The kids know that there will be an opportunity to win another championship in short order at LSU," he said. http://www.nola.com/lsu/t-p/football/index.ssf?/base/sports-2/1216617702165800.xml&coll=1
Let's compare similar press conferences between Miles and Saban: During the Miles-to-Michigan controversy, Miles stood up and said: Yet, during the Saban-to-Alabama controversy, Saban stood up and said: Saban knew when he accepted the head coach job at LSU that everything was set up so that any competent coach would be successful, same thing he knew when he accepted the head coach job at Alabama. However, I'm sure the power-brokers at Alabama knew this as well, and I believe they just plan on using Saban as a stepping-stone coach like he ended up being at LSU. I imagine that they will kick him to the curb as soon as they can find a better coach that Alabama can be proud of, an Alabama coach actually somewhat worthy of wearing the shoes that Bear Bryant once wore (I was honestly hoping that Alabama Coach Mike Shula was going to be that guy for Alabama. After all, he was a former three-year starting star QB for Alabama and son of NFL legend Don Shula).
the concern is that clm was saying using bravado even when he couldnt back it up. evidently we should have no higher expectations of his teams because of anything he says. spurrier doesnt seem to be that way.
I do not remember anybody (even LSU fans) referring to Spurrier's "jabs" as "refreshing". And he more than backed it up for damn near ten years. But as long as when another coach does it to your program it is viewed as "refreshing" then I can't bitch (I usually bitch anyway so what does that matter? :wink. I wonder if another SEC coach had made a comment of similar nature about LSU would it be taken as "refreshing" by the LSU fanbase? Or would it be taken as Bama fans have taken Les' comments?
Your guys should probably be more concerned about winning first. If/when you beat us, it will heal your burns a lot faster. As to Spurrier, no I hated him for it, but I didn't deny the man's talent. And his teams were as talented as anyone in the country. The truly amazing thing I see when I read anything on bama boards about Miles, is how lowly regarded he is when it comes to his ability to coach. Most rivals have moronically hidden behind the "saban's players" crap, which after three years is just that - crap. Even when Miles does plenty with "his players", it's still written off as "an idiot could succeed at LSU". I'm sick of reading it, and no rival will garner any sympathy from me when they engage in that bs. I don't care that Miles is not liked by rival fans. It bothers me not one bit. But the fact that the average rival fan is unable to give him credit for what he has consistently done here, is ridiculous. Liking someone and respecting them are two different things. As long as Miles continues to be disrespected by rivals, I hope he continues to push their buttons. I doubt these are his motivations, but it works for me. Let the whiners just keep on whining...
