You were right...I wasn't even in the know about Earl Alexander. It's nice that the 6'4'' 205lb QB choose Bama over AU and LSU...He sounds really confident that he can come in and take the job from JPW. This is what I wanted---a running QB. If it cant be Jimmy Johns, I hope that Alexander can come in and show us something! He's quick and elusive. Next Vick? Nah, but we can hope he's half of one! :hihi:
He's got WR written all over him...he'll get a shot in the QB slot but I'd bet by the spring of '07 (latest fall of '07) he's working out in a different position than QB. "I wanted a running quarterback..." In turn, means you want a different head coach.
Yeah I know that he could/may end up as a WR...A running QB isn't really in our offense, no but I would just hope for a running QB that also has a nice arm (i.e. MARCUS Vick). I think that a dual-threat QB would do well in the SEC--if he has the supporting cast to help. That's just wishful thinking I know...I just think that it would come in handy, especially since it will take a couple years to develop a dominant SEC-type offensive line. Also, Terry, what do you think about running a little misdirection or trick plays in the Cotton Bowl? I mean, I have been waiting all year for something like this and I thought that Shula would have broken 1 or 2 out against LSU or Auburn but he didn't. What gives? Do you not think that an option/pass or toss sweep/pass with Jimmy Johns in would work? I know that we lined Prothro under center a couple times before his injury but it was no suprise that he was going to just run the ball. Also, what do you think about our upcoming game.......that I will be at! :thumb: Sorry I'm just a lil excited.
You summed it up with the "supporting cast" comment. I've seen JPW in practice a lot over last year and he's more of a running threat than Brodie. In fact, Bino and Ant said that they had a harder time defending JPW when he rolls out than they do Brodie...both with speed and his accuracy. Personally, I'm not a big fan of "trick plays." But, the definition of what a "trick play" is...well, has that ever been defined? If by trick you mean reverse or something along those lines we ran those quite a bit in the first part of the season...well, up until the Ole Miss game when O realized he could beat our OT's easily. Right now, in SEC play, I don't think we could run something like that. With Tx Tech? I haven't seen enough of their defense to make that call. If they over-pursue and get out of their lanes we'd probably see something along those lines. If they don't and remain disciplined, there aren't many teams that would have success with misdirection or something akin to it. I think a half-back pass with JJ would work. Once. We'd have to do that out of a TE set with the FB staying in for protection leaving 2 WR's. JJ is just learning the RB position...he's improved but still has a long way to go. If he had the speed to get to the outside (with the right blocking) I could see some success with the toss-sweep also. Tx Tech has some speed on the ends and in the LB position...takes away a lot of options for getting around the end. I think you will be cold. :thumb: It's all on the defensive scheme and establishing the running game. If we can keep them in front of us (which is what Ball coaches) and give them their yards between the 20's but buckle down in the red-zone we'll be able to win it. We'll need to hold them to 21 pts or under...which will be a task. FWIW, I expect to see a lot of the 3-3-5 with the DL hitting their gaps. Not much blitzing on our part...but dropping 7 back at the most. With practice getting back in full swing soon...ask me again in a few days. I haven't talked with many of the players in several weeks now and just heard from a few of the staff. Most of the topic of conversation has been centered on "Happy Holidays," etc. Football talk will resume soon. Honestly, I've been looking at the SEC in terms of basketball the last few days. LSU and Bama fighting for the West...and it'll come down to Big Baby vs D&D.
I have been a basketball guy too lately. To tell the truth, I am more knowledgeable on basketball than football--I just haven't broken out of my shell yet on this board. Plus, for fear I will be hated, I tend to ramble on about basketball.:hihi: I agree--somewhat though. Arkansas has some real talent over there! They are young and if they get more disciplined before SEC play kicks in, watch out. Their biggest thing to overcome will be winning--on the road. I dunno if you have seen many games but Davidson and Davis have REALLY improved their outside game! In warm-ups before the Georgia St game, Chuck hit 14 3's in a row. Now, I know it's warmups, but we're talking about Chuck Davis here. He also hit one in the game. Davidson has really improved the most I think. If he carries this on the whole year, I'm afraid that we're going to have to say bye-bye to him. Ray George not qualifying really hurt us--BAD. Jonus is a good spot-up shooter but is very slow coming off screens and really has no defensive skills at all and is very undisciplined. The line-up with Steele at the 2 and Hollinger at point looked pretty good also. Hollinger just needs exp. Richard Hendrix is a MAN on the boards. I swear when he grabs a rebound, it's a miracle that the ball doesn't pop! He's good on D and if he gets his offensive skills down, we have the best big men in the nation....Yeah, nation. Alonzo Gee is going to develop soon. He's getting LOTS of time and had 19 agaisnt GSU. I think it was his ''coming out'' party. He reminds me of Winston but without the attitude, quicker, and better looking shot. He is going to be a very promising player. See what I mean about ramble on??? :hihi:
