I'm a little disappointed in the overall offensive philosophy. The approach was a little reminiscent of Jim Mora at the height of the Saints' Dome Patrol era. That team seemed to have a general approach of, defense plays 60 minutes, offense plays until we think we have enough points to win. I didn't, and still don't, have a problem with going conservative at the end of the 1st half, but Steve essentially quit attacking midway through the 3rd quarter. Way too early.
Why? With the way the defense was playing, there was little chance Miami would score 30 points in one and a half quarters. Why take the chance of giving up easy points via an interception. If Miami had shown much on offense, I would agree with you. But, that wasn't the case. There is no benefit to winning by thirty points over 16 points. We beat a team that will probably end up in the top 15, certainly top 20, by 16 points... Whoda thunk it?
I like to step on their throats when they are down to but the victory was pretty much sealed by halftime so I have no problem with wanting to milk the clock. Trouble was we couldn't string first downs together to make the kind of drives that crush the soul the opposition defense. I would like to see more short slants and outs mixed with the running game. And did we throw a single pass to a tight end? I don't remember seeing any.
Good: Players played lights out. Devin White was all over the place - Beast! Burrow was a cool cucumber. Loved how he adjusted the plays to what he saw on defense. Very few penalties once they settled in. Bad: dropped passes, those early Timeouts, missed coverages. Ugly: Reverting to the run, run, pass or run, run, run philosophy that got the previous coach canned. Prevent offense way too early Nasty: The narcissistic asshole on the other site strikes at me again - taking away my messenger and deleting my posts with our chat link in it.
BAD The U did have too many penalties and their STs looked like LSU last year. It didn’t seem like we had a bunch of sustained drives, which is a disappointment. Miami boards are trashing their HC (I was never a fan of Richt) and their QB (which I think is unfair, but interesting). They aren’t giving much credit to LSU, which will probably be the national narrative. Wonder where the polls put us and them. GOOD Dominating an opponent to the extent where everything is ruined reminds me of the old days, glad we could do that.
Bingo. It's the same old song. It's not going to get it done against the big boys. I'll say it again as I have said the last several years, if you pull the reigns on your offense and show no confidence in them, it will affect them psychologically going forward.
Again, Jaimie Howard Auburn... Why would you take a chance to blow the game just so you might score another meaningless touchdown? Miami was not going to score thirty points in one and a half quarters on offense alone. Why take a chance on giving them a cheap and quick touchdown through an interception?
Is that other site still in business? I thought it was close for lack of interest. One good was that I only saw Burrow make one mistake, a pass that should have been intercepted. Other than that he had great presence and command of the audibles. Not his fault he had so little protection. He is going to torch a defense in the near future.
Doesn't mean you don't have confidence in them. It means you're not going to take a chance on a mistake giving them a cheap touchdown just so you can maybe score another touchdown that, ultimately, doesn't mean a thing.
