Thats what I am saying they immediately go out of bounds to stop the clock. He is instructed to do that and not try to take a chance and get tackled therefore running out the clock. Winning with a last second field goal is an example. Lets say its 19 to 21 LSU just needs a field goal to win they are on the opponents 45. They need 10 yards with 10 sec left. You do a quick 10 out route you dont try to go into the endzone you go out of bounds. You complete the pass you kick the field goal. If you miss on that play then you throw it into the endzone. I am right go ahead and admit it.
On the other hand, if its 4th and one at midfield, if the QB breaks the tackle when running a QB sneak, are you saying he should just fall down, since the objective was only to make the first down? Score and time remaining will dictate philosophy, but when those elements aren't critical, every offensive play is run with the intention of scoring a touchdown.
Not saying that at all just proving to Stacey that not every play is designed to be a TD. Of course you run for a TD on a sneak but the scenario I present you dont try to score you run out of bounds.
But that's situational. Go to any football practice high school level and up and watch any offense go through its plays. I'll guarantee that unless they're specifically practicing 2:00 drill, there's a coach yelling "score it, score it" at the ball carrier on every play.
I didn't say situational at first either. Your scenario is correct....in the given situation. The situation alters the objective. But every play is designed with the intent of scoring.
