THE GOOD The offensive line seems to have turned the corner and wore down a very good Ole Miss defense. The Defense stepped up big time, reduced mistakes, and maintained intensity. Pass defense is just excellent. Wallace was held to 42% passing. Ole Miss had 52 yards offense in its last seven drives. Jennings threw 75% of his passes to running backs, tight ends and slotbacks rather than focusing on the wideouts. Quinn gets open a lot on crossing routes but Jennings found him this game for clutch plays. Running backs pounded Ole Miss for four times their average rushing defense. 95-yard 4th quarter TD drive with 12 straight runs that Ole Miss expected and couldn't do a damn thing about. Senior TE Stokes caught the only pass of his career for the game-winning TD. The whole stadium and the Ole Miss defense followed the fake to the FB and Cameron dialed up the perfect unexpected play to an unlikely player. Another 4th-quarter comeback for a Les Miles team that is .511 in such games, far ahead of any other team in the BCS in last 10 years. The crowd definitely affected Ole Miss. Wallace said so. Nobody left early. This team is improving. It cannot be denied. Tight end Dickson made about four fine trap blocks to spring the backs. Huge defensive stop on 4th and one. Adams, Mills, and Beckwith were not fooled. Hell of a fun game to watch. Old-time smash-mouth defensive football. Best game on TV Saturday, dominated the highlight shows. THE BAD Four turnovers. We won't win a lot of games with four turnovers. Three or four dropped interceptions. Got to take advantage of those. Keehn shanked another one. When he's good he's very good, when he's bad . . . 63 and 70 yard drives that ended in zero first-half points. Magee did not return after a knee injury, I hope its not bad. Another no-show by Mike the Tiger. We must find some better tiger handlers. Missed short field goal by Delahoussaye. Overt pass interference that took away an interception. THE UGLY It wasn't an inadvertent whistle, it was an incompetent whistle. This referee crew was bad the whole game. Bad calls, no calls, quick whistles, the whole five yards. Hugh Freeze was the coach who couldn't manage the clock. Bad decision not to give your kicker a chance to tie the game, coach.
The missed FG by Delahoussaye you could see coming from a mile away. He has pulled and hooked about a dozen extra points this season (missing one of them). It was only time until it would hurt us in the FG department in terms of a gimme FG.
did anyone record this to listen for the whistle? i thought i heard one but not til he had broken free about the 5 yard line.
I love the smash mouth football that was played last night. On facebook I made a similar comment. Saying,"The Big 12 and Pac 12 could keep their 60-50 games. Give me a 10-7 SEC defensive struggle any day...."
I agree with the entire list Red. The officiating crew was frustrating to watch. They definitely had a bad night.
heres the rub. when that style is ugly and not working, its putrid. when it works and offensive and defensive lines are dominating, theres nothing better. in fact, it reminds me how far the nfl has fallen with its current flag football display. we cant even see this style at the highest level any longer with the best athletes. it can only be seen in the sec and on rare occasions. there was some real hitting going on last night. and actual defense being played. its hard to beat when played on that level.
