Agree with all. THE BAD The team continues to be way too inconsistent. 6 games in and we have yet to put together a complete game in all 3 phases. We went ultra conservative way too early in the 2nd half, which allowed FU back into the game. If we had the D from 2011, I could understand it, but we don't and if it continues, it will cost us a game we should win. IMO, the play calling on the last 2 possessions was atrocious. Don't get me wrong, I have no issues with #7 running it each and every time. My issue was continuing to run up the middle out of the I-formation. I thought we would have been better served spreading the field and letting him find naturally occurring running lanes or just something a little more creative than what we did. I know Miles is thinking they were worn down and Fournette would pop one, but Florida has a ton of depth on D, so that wasn't going to happen. I thought Guice and Williams should have gotten a few more than 2 touches each, just to spell Fournette a little. He had 180 yards on 31 carries and earned every one of them. Nuff said
It wasn't going to happen on every play. But it may have been needed to set up a play action pass or an outside run. But I think it was mostly because we needed to keep Florida's offense off the field, they were killing us with the pass. I hate to suggest that Les was being smart with the clock, but we needed to raise our lagging time of possession and did so successfully. The clock is running while all of those behemoth linemen are untangling and getting set up. There is nothing as frustrating to an opponent's offense than to be trailing while you stand on the sidelines unable to do anything about it, watching the minutes slip away. Think Tebow crying on the bench. If we are running Fournette more than 20 time a game with backups like this, it is a needless risk to Fournette and wasted opportunities for the other backs. Still, nobody is more dependable than Fournette when we really need it and this was a key game against a top-10, SEC opponent. We needed first downs to keep them florida off they field.
We also threw a couple of passes on those drives--unsuccessfully, though. Florida definitely manned up on offense and defense in the 2nd half. They gave it everything they had, but they are still the team that came out of there with a loss last night.
I figured Fournette would get 30 carries. I thought situationally Guice could have been mixed in more. I still think LSU needs to work on the zone read more. There is an opportunity to get big yards with Harris, but I understand not wanting him to take too many shots against a hard hitting defense. I can't complain too much about the offensive balance I just don't like the plays that were called in the 2nd half. Run pass fine, but what pass plays are called? What run plays are called?
Did anyone notice how big Greg Gilmore is? The man is a giant. He was getting after Harris on the play that was whistled dead because of a UF timeout.
Not really, I just like the calls he made, even on some of the plays where the defender screws up. We held a very good top 10 rated SEC offense to 14 points which in my mind is pretty darn good. Do we have some holes to fill, absolutely we do. But I like what I see most of the time, especially the run defense. I also believe that we need to work on containment against mobile QB's as that was when they made a lot of their plays. I have watched a lot of CFB and am pleased with our defensive play overall this year. These high octane offenses are hard to stop these days but our D seems to be doing a better job than most. Can't wait till November rolls around to see how we play against those teams. Hopefully the blown assignments will be much fewer by then. Heck just last week I posted that I had not been happy with Cam for the most part since Mett left but I do like the improvement we've seen this year.
I was wondering the same thing. I think what worried us in the moo u game has moved him down the charts. He just looks slow coming out of his stance, still surprised Weleathersby came in first. It's possible he's nicked and just don't know. If not being beat our by a second true freshman doesn't look good for his future playing time.
