THE GOOD LSU beat a top-10 team with a stout defense that was allowing 99 yards rushing. Fournette can run for 180 without breaking a big one. Eight straight 100-yard games. 52-yard pass on a flea-flicker--Fournette to Harris to Dupre. 16 yard TD run by Domingue who then kicked the PAT and gets all 7 points. First TD in his football career. Walk-on quarterback Kragthorp didn't get a TD pass, but he threw a TD lateral on his knees. Balanced attack with 221 rushing and 202 passing. Harris is starting to come around on getting his passes off quickly. His scrambling and running are becoming assets. Nice touch on the fade TD. LSU ran Fournette 31 times but mixed in the pass and some trick plays. I think Cameron has been holding back a lot of plays because we just didn't need to show them to anybody to win the first 5 games. Guice had a 32-yard kickoff return. He needs to see more action returning kicks. Dural and Dupree seem to be in mid-season form, although Dural dropped another one. THE BAD Big Dillon Gordon catches a pass on his first play back from being hurt and gets hurt again. The defense continues to have breakdowns in pass coverage giving up big plays. Wide open receivers caught at least 5 passes with nobody near them. This ain't DBU. Our linebackers simply cannot cover receivers and it looks like they are actually getting worse. Tredavious White muffed a punt that he should never have gone near. Good returner, but he kept making bad decisions that may cost us a game soon. The defense has not been dominant all year and does not look to be improving. LSU has now given up a TD kickoff return and a TD punt return. Changes must be made. Diarse and Quinn are seeing no balls at all. Mike VI will not return to Tiger Stadium this year. THE UGLY Special teams again. Fumbled punt return, two shanked punts, allowed another big 72-yard return for a TD. Les need to develop another punter and another punt returner. Both of our guys are not consistent and competition might help. Return teams need a shakeup badly. Gamble finally kicked off properly into the end zone.
Hate the base D because it takes KT2 off the field. I get the veteran experience with Thomas but he doesn't do anything better than KT. But I will allow that last night Thomas played a pretty strong game. It was Jefferson that caught the blues last night...
Lewis Neal should be added to the good IMO. The guy was disruptive all night and seemed to be in Harris' face on every pass play.
Any change Game Day is in BTR this week? I don't see any better games on the slate and this is really the only opportunity to have it there.
I agree. There were a number of plays were the DB's didnt know who to cover. it was clear. Also Jones did a pretty good job in coverage last night.
Overall another great analysis Red. I would put the second half play calling as ugly. LSU was far more wide open in the first half which enabled them to be up by 14 at the half. The second half LSU became conservative, trying to sit on the lead rather than continuing to try to make plays. The pass plays were mostly on third down, most were not appropriate routes.
LSU was more conservative, but I disagree that this is always bad. We have been successful in grinding out long drives and keeping the other offense on the sidelines. They can't score if they are not on the field. Because we can run, we take advantage of this. We throw when we need to. It works.
Also agree about this not being DBU anymore. Allowing a running quarterback to throw for 271 and 2 TD's is ridiculous. Watch how well he does the rest of the season, it will show you what a sad state this secondary is in. LSU's defense has made bad quarterbacks look good all season. Secondary is blowing assignments almost every drive. 4 big plays of 30 yards or more last night were given up by LSU in the passing game. That just can't happen.
