I become skeptical whenever I hear anybody say "It does not matter how many games he has won." Wins are a concrete benchmark for success. That is more significant to me than what somebody subjectively supposes what we "should have done". If talent equals success and lack of talent at QB has led to less success, as you suggest, then Les has done his job recruiting top quarterbacks. Perilloux proved to be socially flawed, Zach Lee left for pro baseball, Russell Shepard was out of position, and Gunner Kiel had no chest. We were quite successful with the one that stuck around. We can fault Les for misusing Shepard, perhaps, but I can't fault him for the other three who bailed on us. It left us having to start freshmen too early and having to start quarterbacks that were recruited to be backups. And I think he has shown with Mettenberger and Flynn that when he has a quarterback that can throw the ball, we will throw the ball. And the verdict is still out on Harris.
Almost all of us do enjoy LSU football and being realistic doesn't preclude seeing negatives along with the positives. CLM has proven that he can and has adjusted for mistakes especially when it comes to his hiring of assistant coaches. Making mistakes is a given and part of life for coaches and players too which brings me back to CLM and QBs --- In last week's game, we had a back-up QB available. If Harris would have had a longer lease even if he did make a mistake, he could have been pulled for a series or two and then put back in to learn from his mistake. Learning to overcome mistakes is more important than trying to keep from making them because to be realistic, we can't expect to keep mistakes from happening. Especially for leaders, learning that they are part of a team that will step up to help individuals overcome adversity and produce a team victory is crucial for individual as well as team growth. The best laid plans of mice and Miles will meet adversity. One of the fun parts of being a fan, even more than always winning is cheering for a team that gives its best. I've personally enjoyed a number of games where we on the short side of the final score if our team played like tigers, especially in rebuilding years. As a fan, one of the few times and by far the worst I've ever felt watching an LSU game was the 0-21 NC tragedy which was the epitome of overly conservative & stubborn coaching. I have to admit that I experienced some of those bad feelings last week when we went overly conservative in the second quarter. Well to be Zen and end this --- I suppose that one must have some gloom to experience enjoyment.
Who's fault is it that we have failed to recruit correctly at QB? If not Miles then who? You can excuse it if it happens once or twice as just bad luck. Miles has NEVER recruited and developed a QB. This isn't some "man that sucks that things broke wrong." This is a complete and utter failure of Miles system to recruit and develop a QB. Are you seriously going to sit here and excuse Miles for ten years of failure at the most important position in football? Go ahead and hide behind: never losing to an OOC team *oops* uh in regular season, oh I meant having an 80% wi. . .nvm, actually it was having a winning record against all other SEC Coac. . .Wait, no it was really that he has [made] it to a NC game every 4 years. Yeah that's the one!
I would not write off that CLM recruited and can develop Harris. Harris can be a very special QB for LSU. Just sayin
I hopes so but the jury is still out on Harris. Quit trying to protect him from making a mistake on the grounds that it would crush his psyche. If his ego is that fragile he shouldn't be playing football. Harris in not going to go through the entire season without throwing an interception. Almost no quarterback does.
The jury is still out for sure and he will definitely throw some picks this year. I think LSU will open it up. CLM will always play hide the QB to a certain extent as he thinks by doing so he is limiting our exposure to mistakes and running the football is his philosophy. But it looks like Harris has bought in to CLM's style as well though.
True That. All in all I have been really impressed with Harris's demeanor, poise and leadership through fall camp and after last Saturday. He sounds extremely intelligent, although none of that really matters if he cant go out lead this team to wins on the field. Or as CLM would put it: "have a want to fight like hell, and lead this team to victory" LMAO
