Gas taxes are what pays for our highways.

Of course the government is responsible for taxes. How else would roads get built and maintained?

But environmentalists? NATO? Give me a break! They don't recieve gasoline taxes.

What roads? I haven't seen many new roads in the baton rouge area and the ones that exist are very poorly maintained. I'd like to know where all that road money is being spent because the tires of my vehicle hasn't seen it.

    What twisted said.
Yes, I know gas taxes are suppose to pay for roads and highways but it aint
    happening.
We all know how efficient our government is at this type of thing, maybe thats how william jefferson got some of his cash?

My bad, got my abbreviations mixed up thinking OPEC but typed NATO.
No where did I say environmentalists receive gas taxes.
I just said they are complaining about gas prices when they are partly responsible for no refinery being built in about 25 years and no drilling of oil
in America for the most part.
Hopefully some good will come out of this in the long run however in alternative fuels but I hate sending all that money to our enemies in the middle east and funding terrorist organizations with our oil money, thats
    blood for oil!

How are environmentalists stopping big oil from building refineries in other countries? The lack of refining capacity is a deliberate choice by the gas producers.

Where are you getting the information that US and other big oil companies are not building refineries in other countries?

I'm saying they are not building them at a pace that will keep up with global demand. If capacity is the issue why are they not building enough refineries to keep up with demand. Seems like now would be the time to do it when they have so much money they are using it as toilet paper.

They are building them big and fast, just not here. Who says they're not keeping up with demand, I haven't seen any gas stations that are out of gas. If you think that supplies are so short they have to raise the price enough to where people cut back so they will not run out you've been reading too many Al Gore books. The price is high because people are willing to pay it.

That sounds right if you have a long term outlook, but in todays get mine and get out society the folks in charge of the purse strings say cut cut cut, no matter how large the profits. How do you think Lee Raymond ended up with a retirement package worth almost 1 billion dollars? It's not like he owned the company, he was just an employee. If you think todays CEO's could care less about anything other than the immediate future and how they can get paid the most you're only fooling yourself. Take a tour of some of the local refineries reporting world record profits and then tell me why they are falling apart in such times of great profits.

Are you kidding? The orange barrels are everywhere. They are doing work at Sherwood and I-12, and what about the new Juban Road - I-12 interchange, just to name a couple. Baton Rouge has seen a ton of new road construction and repair in the last several years.

Wrong again. Recent refinery shut-downs were caused by accidents and maintenance.

Are you kidding? Patching holes in old worn out roads and a new on off ramp is what we get for the hundreds of million dollars collected? I've lived in other states and cities and believe me Louisiana and Baton Rouge are very far behind the curve.
