Honestly, that game didn't look like Gary Crowton was playcalling calling, I barely saw any shotgun and pistol, which is not very GCish
You know, if Miles stays, he could have an opportunity to get David Shaw from Stanford. Stanford has expressed interest in Chris Petersen from Boise State. Now that doesn't mean Petersen is going to take the job of course, and Shaw, and 2 other coaches from Harbaugh's staff at Stanford, including the defensive coordinator (who is rumored to be going to join Harbaugh in San Fran) are going to be interviewed for the HC job at Stanford along with Petersen. Shaw could be looking for work if a new coach comes in. And if it's Petersen, you can bet he is taking his staff with him to Stanford.
11-2 with our QB play? And he's an "idiot?" Ruin Mett? "Pathetic play calling?" You kneaux, scientific studies have shown negativity takes years off your life. Over the years, how many games has Crowton lost in which his QB performed well?
Give me a break dude...Our offense has been in the lower 1/4 of division 1 rankings for the last three years and you don't think we need a change at OC? How many threads have we seen on here about the lack of utilization of players such as Russell Shephard? How many times have we all cringed at the "short side of the field option call"...which by the way we saw at least three times in the bowl game and it failed to work....AGAIN! How many times have we begged for at least an ATTEMPT at a down field passing game to keep the defense honest and open up some running lanes? Crowton's track record is what it is...great in year one and then steady decline. His offense is the most vanilla thing I have ever seen and he continues to demonstrate the lack of ability to develop players. He is a joke! If you were to poll this forum, I would venture to say that over 90 percent of posters would want him gone. You my friend are in a very, very small minority.
It was more than great in year one, it was the greatest in LSU history. His offenses are most definitely not vanilla, if anything, they are too complex. I have seen more trick plays and different formations the past few years than I have ever seen watching LSU football. Jimbo Fisher had a vanilla offense. The inability to develop players is a legit concern though. And we all know the forum knows what's best for the team. You should have polled the forum after the Tennessee game this year or Ole Miss game last year to see how many wanted Les Miles fired and look at us now. It got mentioned somewhere that Trent Johnson is in a similar situation yet he still is given the benefit of the doubt.
I was of a different impression initially, but with all the CLM stuff as of late I could see this not playing out like most of us want. Should Miles stay, I can see him retaining GC just for the sake of continuity. At this point the team is primed for a MNC run and Miles maynot want to cause any possible set backs. Like the O having to learn a new system.
I think the bowl game saved is a$$. If Les stays so does Crouton. Hopefully Mett will be smart like Flynn and be able to run his offense better than tweedle dee and tweedle dumb.
I think that the bama, Ole Miss, and ATM games showed us what Crowton is capable of when he trusts his QB. For most of 2009, and for the first 8 games of this year, he tried too hard to mold a conservative game plan around Jefferson's supposed inexperience. Conservative has never been Crowton's forte. It became very, very obvious that they opened things up out of necessity vs bama, and that's when our offense turned the proverbial corner. We did OK in the Arky game, but he seemed to bounce around between wide-open and uber-conservative. Bu that loss was on our defense, anyway. Regardless, the offense that we saw in those games was very similar to what we saw in 2007 when we basically just scored at will. In fact, the ATM game was giving me serious flashbacks to that season. Also, I think Crowton can excel with a drop-back passer or a dual-threat guy. He had us moving the ball pretty well with the option and read-option towards the end of the year. And remember how incredible our offense looked when Lee was doing well earlier in the year? Also, Flynn was a drop-back guy (with mobility) in '07. So I think that Mettenberger could fit in well. I was one of those who was nearly willing to kidnap Gary early on in the year. But, the offense really seemed to gel in the last few games, so maybe it's worth another chance. Only the coaches know what transpired to make the offense respectable, so I'll just have to trust their judgment.
The numbers might surprise you. After the 2009 season, this same topic came up, so I decided to find out. http://forums.tigerfan.com/tigers-den/93048-charlie-weiss-oc-3.html#post1025130 Granted, some of those staffs have probably changes, but the point is still valid.
