Oh please. We all know why Skip hired Smoke Laval. And it had nothing to do w/ "keeping it in the family", unless of course, you're talking about keeping the camp money in the Bertman family.
True, but when you are playing through early January its tough to find a coach that has not been hired already. I think Les had a guy in mind that ran his mouth and that was the end of that. Turns out he made a terrible hire. He'll either learn from his mistakes or he will be canned. I think he is smart enough to not do that again.
With that the example has to be made. Pink slips served with or without cigars, either way they are served. :tigereye:
dont forget mallory came over with les from Okie State. Thats his boy, which is why i just dont think he will let him go. I think he is way too stubborn, and way too loyal to do it. I honestly believe that Mallory will be the sole DC next season, and its going to suck! To me Les Miles is that guy who drives the bus straight off the cliff because he dosent want to admit there isnt a bridge there.
And we've seen that act before, about 10 years ago. Sometimes I think these guys let their success go to their heads. They start believeing their press.
I hear what you're saying, but reality is it's just not that way anymore. Major NCAA programs are very much out in the open. There was time when photographers never showed pictures of FDR in a wheelchair for fear of him appearing weak. Could you imagine that now? Coaches know that (or should) prior to getting in the profession and now it's just a part of it. It's not just athletics, though; everyone's an expert from the economy to foreign policy. Our hangup just happens to be college football. Good thing, too, though. Otherwise, this board would be quite boring.
You think Les is going to endanger his $3.75 million salary out of loyalty to a guy who is bringing in no recruits and has failed to establish a credible defense this year? I don't. Loyalty only goes so far in the coaching business. The head coach's first loyalty is to himself. Les gave his friend a shot and it didn't work out. Too bad--that's all the loyalty he deserves or is likely to get. He'll get a good reference from Les and find another coaching job. Les will move on. It has always been this way. Coaches that remain too loyal to assistants who aren't getting the job done become former coaches . . . you only have to witness Cholly Mac and Gerry Dinardo for evidence.
