This young man played with alot of heart. His WR's could have helped him out a little more by catching passes that hit them in the hands. He showed alot of courage out there in a National Championship game against the nation's #1 defense on a national stage. ....and the 'horns were in the game! I hope the Texas faithful show him courtesy and respect and I hope that the local media doesn't trash him. His stats don't tell the whole story. That is all.
IF UT fans are anything like ours, they will prob be jumping off a cliff next year thinking of watching the kid start a season.......
He definitely stepped it up in the 2nd half. Texas went from being blown out to having a chance to win the game, which no one thought was possible. I'll give him props for that. However, he did have an awful game. O-line, receivers, running game were pretty much shut down, but had he limited his mistakes, it wouldn't have been such a big hill to climb at the end.
I saw a lot of similarities to our situation. Receivers dropping balls, Gilbert locking in on one receiver, Gilbert holding on to the ball too long, play calling had to be simplified for him because he didn't understand the playbook, the game being too fast for a freshman, being thrown to the wolves... Reminded me of Lee (last year) and Jefferson this year. The only thing missing would be people booing McCoy and calling for his transfer.:dis:.
I said it earlier this season that i thought Gilbert would break all of McCoy's records at Texas if he stays all 4 years. The kid was really good last night. His receivers didn't help him out much, one dropped a sure touchdown in the 2nd quarter. The officials were horrible, they jobbed Texas pretty hard, on the 2 PI no calls, and then on the PI call and face mask call that went against Texas. Gilbert is going to be phenomenal for Texas in the next few seasons.
Yep, that's the way it's been for the Gumps all year, going back to the Peterson pick that wasn't called, to Bama being called for less that 10 holding penalties all year, to the PI calls against Texas when Bama had one way worse that wasn't called. I've always heard the cliche' that to have an undefeated season, you have to have some luck along the way. Well the Gumps have certainly had more than their fair share of luck and help from the zebras. The lack of holding penalties are what really stand out to me. I know the Gumps have one of the best O-lines in football, but that's ridiculous. I would LOVE to see a game between the Gumps and Boise St.
