LSU is 5th in the nation is first down run defense, allowing only 2.7 yards per attempt. Florida averages 8.2 yards per attempt on first down (best in college football). Rainey, Moody and Demps are all over the 10 yard mark in that regard. I suspect we'll meet somewhere in the middle. The closer it gets to 2.7, the more successful this defense will be today. I'll put the over/under at 4.2 ypc on first down. LSU has a daunting task to limit the damage and keep our defense competitive. We can't miss a tackle today. Not one, because it might be the one that results in a long touchdown run. We also have to be extremely disciplined, because Florida comes at you in every different direction. Just like the play where Georgia tried that wideout reverse and Sheppard kept to his assignment and nailed him for a 10 yard loss, we will need to be aggressive without losing assignment. Definitely not easy against this team. Hernandez is the only receiver that worries me if we bunch the line. Again we must be disciplined and the safety or whoever gets assigned to him out in coverage doesn't bite on the play action. I hope we play man coverage for most of the game and leave our guys one on one. We need the safeties active for the run support.
man i agree. we all know that LSU is more than good enough to win this game, but LSU misses a ton of tackles and always gives up at least a couple HUGE plays. i just hope we can match them point for point. i'm feeling a lot less optimistic about this game this AM. this whole tebow thing has me thinking that UF has been scheming something special for LSU. if LSU has been playing close to the vest, then it's possible that florida has been as well. they looked pathetic against tennessee until the very end. it was like they flipped a switch. man this is going to be a great game!!!!! GEAUX TIGERS!!!!
I don't think LSU missed a tackle vs. Georgia. They looked totally focused for the first time all year on defense last week. We need that trend to continue. I suspect it will.
gators got three kids in the backfield that run by committee so yeah, needs to hit em hard at the line and get that outside penetration. linebackers are gonna be key and you are right, Chad Jones needs the game of his life. Are we looking at a wet or soaked field today? I think weather, if so plays into our hands. :helmet:
Yep, if we get the Chad Jones from last week's game vs Georgia, we're in serious trouble. He was nowhere to be found. We need some LaRon Landry/Craig Steltz type impact plays. Hernandez coming over the middle needs to think of where Jones is on the field and make him a little leery of being hit. Jones needs to send a message early with a big hit. I hope he can come through.
They usually cover the field on a rainy night before the game. But it comes off Saturday morning and it has been raining in Baton Rouge today. It will shower ond an off today, too. The field will be wet, but probably not a mudhole.
i can remember a couple, but they weren't that bad because someone else made the play within a yard or two. but against guys like demps and rainey and moody, that may be converted to a 10+ yard play. i think if we can contain florida and NOT give up big plays this game is definitely winnable. i think chavis' defense is almost the perfect D for a team like florida.
well we have been bunching the line all year long (and thus the 2.7 yard stat I alluded to). Another key to this game is whether Tebow can make us pay for being so aggressive with passing the ball. I say he won't, at least not on a consistent basis. I agree LSU's scheme on defense is probably one that has the best chance at success.
Florida always comes up with something new against us so I expect more of that. They unveiled the jump pass against us and last year didn't they come up with the wide spacing of their OL? Against other teams they just seem to run what they run and beat them to death but against us they seem to feel they always need a surprise. Maybe that means Meyer's got some respect for our talent. Now let's see if we have a few surprises for them. It would be really cool to think that we have been practicing some new stuff for weeks now with the Gators in mind all of the while.
I sure hope so. I don't think Les Miles or Gary Crowton will hold back ANYTHING this week. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain by throwing the kitchen sink at Florida tonight. :geaux:
