I watched some doctor try to explain an elarged heart. Basically he said there were 2 types. Enlarging of the heart chambers (Athletes) and enlarging and thickening of the muscle wall (disease, illness). Basically he said all high level athletes have at least a slightly enlarged heart because the heart chambers have gotten larger to support their athletic output. This apparently is not a danger in itself. It is when athletes have a mix of both the enlarged chamber and thickened muscle that the problems happen. Because they don't determine which cause is actually responsible for the enlargement. So they could have easily known he had an enlarged heart, but it was passed off as an elarged chamber and they never took the thickening of the walls seriously or it was never diagnosed as a problem.
Correct, it seems like he explained it well. The NFL and even the NCAA should require all athletes to get annual checkups from a cardiologist. This would have prevented 2 deaths this week alone.
Everytime i hear about an athlete dying from heart issues it always reminds me of Don Redden. Very sad indeed. Plus Raheem Morris didn't have very many nice things to say about this kid. Apparently Morris labeled him as a major bust, which was why he was dealt to the Bears. I don't think coaches should be calling players busts. If anyone is a bust Raheem Morris is a bust as a coach. Very sad.
Off topic but when I was 7 I learned how to read EKGs and was very good. I would read them with my dad when they were brought by the house at night. I would call enlarged hearts "Big Heart" though but I knew the rest of the proper terms like Bundle Branch Block, STT waves, cardiac arrest, etc... Everyone always asks me why I did not become a doctor and I say because I was burnt out from it because of my childhood.
