I read on another forum that his father has said we lead for his signature. Any chances this is true or just a rumor. Supposedly Oklahoma feels he is theirs but they messed up with his brother and it didn't sit well with Gabe.
Outstanding 5 star DB (scout, 2nd ranked in the nation) that LSU has suddenly become a major player. His father is a Tiger fan, lives in Houston. OU and Nebraska should make it tough to get his services.
I think he ends up at Nebraska, but that's just an educated guess. This is shaping up to be a battle between Rivals and Scout. Mike at Rivals thinks we have a real shot at Darius Winston, while Sonny at Scout thinks Winston's a longshot but that we have a real shot at Lynn.
He's apparently cooled on Nebraska due to the coaching change, but there's still time for Pelini to turn it around. However, Pelini was never noted for his recruiting abilities.
As a recruiter, Pelini didn't have a recruiting beat, and didn't go out on the road all that much, but he definitely had a role in recruiting. He was a "closer" with defensive recruits. If a guy was considering LSU but was shaky, Pelini would come in to try to close the deal. I think he'll be a fine recruiter for a head coach.
He didn't develop relationships, which is the real key to recruiting. He should be fine as a head coach though - as long as he has other coaches that are very good recruiters, but even then I don't see recruiting being great while he's there. We'll see though.
Generally when Mike & Sonny disagree, I'm inclined to take Sonny's word. That said, there is some "insider" word on Winston that apparently things look very, very good for us. I don't think we'd take both of them, so it may just be a matter of which one commits first. We're also in it with Branden Smith so I'd say there's a little better than 50% chance we land one of the top 5 CBs in the country in this class.
IMO, we already have landed one of the top 5 CBs in Janzen Jackson, but I wouldn't turn down an opportunity to get a 2nd one.
