I don't recall him ever saying that their jobs as Co-DC's were "untouchable"....Not saying that it's not out there--I'm just saying I've personally never heard/read it. And I'm not going to be overly critical of Miles' decision to reward his coaches with an opportunity. I mean, be honest, both Mallory and Peveto have done good things while here. Mallory has done a good job with the secondary (not so much this season obviously) and Peveto, while his Special teams' play kinda dipped in production from his previous 2 seasons, he's done a good job recruiting for us. So I'm not against giving these guys an opportunity to see if they can succeed as DC's. If coaches are doing good for your program (be it X's and O's or recruiting), there are far worse things you can do than to take a chance at having them succeed while keeping them. And even if Miles still gives them next season to see if they can perform (be it based on the first-time starters at various position this season or simply to give them a fair shake), you can always hire assistant coaches.
Also, when you return such a big chunk of the team that go you to the SEC championship game and have a QB (Crompton) that played well for them last season when he had to play, yet you struggle to even reach .500, there's only so many places you can search to lay blame. Also, Fulmer's record vs UF, UGA and 'Bama--their top 3 rivals--hasn't been good over the past 5 seasons or so.
:geaux::crystal::helmet: I hope and pray he has!! We need a proven DC who can be succesful in the SEC. The lack of one is killing us right now! The two we have now ain't cuttin' it. :geauxtige:champs::LSU231:
Thats a BIG number too but its not just limited to those teams. I dont remember the actual percentage but in the last 5 years vs top 25 teams Tenn is like 11-30 and something like 6-18 at home. That may not be exact but its an abysmal record.
By avoiding an ugly blood letting fight Fulmer guaranteed himself a classy, respectful departure. I dont think Fulmer is all that classy but for a guy who has dedicated almost his entire life to one school, he deserves to go out in style.
Eh...I'll believe this when I see it. I heard somewhere on ESPN last year that Les Miles was going to Michigan. We all know how that turned out...
Damn... As soon as I read this I texted all my Tennessee fan friends and they are ALL ridiculously excited. I don't know a single one who isn't excited about this.
I agree with that. It's always better to reward your assistants if they do a good job and hire within if possible, so I don't blame him. However, now that we know the outcome of that decision, we'll have to see if Miles owns it and does the right thing at the end of the year. And as for loyalty, he doesn't even have to fire them. They can just go back to their roles as position coaches.
