While at the gym I briefly caught the headline on ESPN 2 His and Hers that they were debating, "is Leonard Fournette the best college RB you've seen?" I wasn't able to hear their response and there was no subtitles. I think we, as fans often get caught up in the moment. However if he keeps this up through the season and next the question is legit. Fournette has the skillset and mindset to go down as one of, if not the greatest college RB ever. I think the question is really impossible to answer because it's subject, but that is what makes the debate fun. I was pretty young but do remember a bit from Herschel, Dalton, Jackson, and Dupree. Some of the best backs I've seen, in no order: Herschel Walker, Marcus, Dupree, Bo Jackson, Barry Sanders, Ricky Williams, Marshall Faulk, Adrian Peterson, and DMC. '
Reggie Bush is the most productive and versatile back I've ever seen. I'm of the age where I don't recall much before about 1990. The numbers below speak for themselves. It will be a long time before we see a guy at a major program who runs, catches and returns kicks/punts (had 4 TDs there, too) like he did.
Collins 1997 22-172/0 @ miss st 27-232/2 vs auburn (#12) 20-179/1 vs akron 3-13/0 @ vandy 8.3 ypc (hmmmm, just a tad under lf7) i dont think he wouldve been as good as lf7, but good enough for #2 all time LSU rb. he looked the part and those first two were not flukes. he was no justin vincent. btw, commonalities btw 2015 and 1997 is a very good/great OL and anemic passing (127 for 1581 with 10 td)
Earl Campbell was a beast. Billy Simms was special in college. Herschel was amazing. Hell, OJ, and a few other SC backs were amazing, too. So many. Too hard to anoint one. LF is just the most recent in our growing society of "what have you done for me lately", "greatest ever" mindset that is prevalent everywhere.
I remember seeing Campbell and Simms in the NFL but I'm too young to have seen them in college. I wish I could have watched OJ, everything I have seen he was special. "What have you done for me latey," is exactly what this society is. That said, Fournette has some rare qualities.
Oh, no doubt. Not saying LF won't be there with some of those names. But 3 games is way too soon for that conversation.
