Just wanted to brag about former LSU Golfer Phil Schmitt who will be playing in the 2007 PGA Championship. Phil is my cousin as well. He will have a piece done on him on CBS on Sunday at 1pm called the "Road to the Championship". He is a hardcore LSU sports fan, and will represent the University well. Good luck Phil!

BATON ROUGE -- Former LSU standout Phil Schmitt was one of 20 golfers to receive an exemption to compete in this year’s PGA Championship as he earned a top-20 finish at the 40th PGA Professional National Championship in Sunriver, Ore., on Sunday.

Schmitt finished in a tie for ninth place in a field of 312 PGA Professionals from across the country to punch his ticket to the 89th PGA Championship, which will be held at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., from Aug. 9-12.

Schmitt, who is the PGA Head Professional at The Bluffs in St. Francisville, La., opened with a 1-under 70 at the Meadows Course at the Sunriver Resort followed by solid rounds of 2-over 74, 2-under 70 and 2-over 74 at the Crosswater Course to finish with a 72-hole score of 1-over 288.

He will be making his first career appearance in a major championship since turning pro in 1996 after a stellar collegiate career at LSU. Schmitt was a three-time letterman for the Tigers from 1993-95 as he finished his career with five top-10 finishes and 11 top-20 finishes in three seasons.
