Here's the list of seniors from this coming year's team. I added Pat Pete because there's a very, very good chance he aint coming back next year. I didn't include fellas who don't have numbers, although Jordan Newell's name is worth mentioning for all his hard work as a football senior - way to go, bud. There is no agenda behind this post, by the way. Just data and some thoughts about the data. Seniors Joe Barksdale (LT) Kelvin Sheppard (LB) Terrence Tolliver (WR) Pep Levingston (DL) Josh Jasper (P/PK) Richard Murphy (RB) Drake Nevis (DT) Derek Helton (P) Jai Eugene (DB) Patrick Peterson (CB, Jr.) Richard Dugas (FB) Jonathan Nixon (DE) Zach Elkins (DB) Daniel Graf (S) Points to ponder as the season begins. 1. 14 seniors, including Jr. Pat Pete. That's not that many seniors. In fact, it's a low number. In contrast there are 22 juniors, 19 sophomores, and 51 freshmen, including a large number of redshirts. (again - didn't count those without numbers) 2. The starting offense is relatively young, with 3 seniors: 1 on the OL, 1 RB, 1 WR. May be 4 if Dugas wins starting FB role. 3. The starting defense is considerably more seasoned, with 5 potential seniors starting (Eugene may not start afterall). Obviously, losing Pat Pete will leave a mark regardless of who replaces him. 4. Kicker and punter in their senior year. So what? Here's what I take from all that. LSU is a relatively young team this season. LSU will need some juniors (besides Pat Pete) to step up big time and assume leadership roles. LSU underclassmen (especially freshmen) have a very good chance at breaking into the two deep. Along the same lines, LSU will have some thin spots experience-wise on the two-deep, and LB is one of the most glaring spots. WR is another one. Holy crap, did that really say 51 freshmen?
That is true and redshirt freshmenm right? Sorry, I see u answered this question in your post. This can only be a good thing for down the road. Next year and after look good.
I don't think that it can be 51 freshmen as the scholarship limit is 85. Using your numbers: 14 Srs + 22 Jrs + 19 Sophs + 51 Fresh = 106 Although 51 for freshmen does sound reasonable if you combine true freshmen with redshirt. Can anyone make sense of this math?
Stats came right of LSU's roster on LSUSports.net. And the freshmen include redshirts. Looking back a few years, it's a pretty standard number and it's because of the redshirts and also the walkons. Geaux to LSUSports.net and click on teams>football>roster
Also if I understand the rules right we will not be eligible to count back anyone in the 2011 class because now that we have 25 enrolled from the 2010 class we are not eligible to count anyone back with a greyshirt. So we should see all the extra scholarships given to walk-ons this year. If for example, we ended up only taking 24 in 2010 we could greyshirt 1 in the 2011 class as long as the athlete enrolled early.
We have 9 scholarship seniors, is that right? It poses lots of questions. What happened to that class? Was that the year when we only signed 12 or 13? Does it force LSU to undersign this year to meet the 85 next summer?
