That's why Clemons was moved to LB, and we have a couple incoming freshmen there also. Depth at LB is a big concern to me, because Cutrera's performance to date has not given me a reason to be confident.
I love what Coleman did in the NC, no doubt. But that was only 1 game. He had not proved much of anything up until that point. Jones has showed what a stud he will be in his limited play. I believe he is ready to take over the SS spot. Coleman will play SS in the nickel package while Jones moves over to the nickel, so they will both get lots of reps at the SS position. Looks like Francois has a good chance at backing up Taylor this season if he can prove himself. I would like to see McCray moved to LB.
I agree, but I'm of two minds on this. On one hand, we've only seen him get significant PT in one game. On the other hand, it was a BIG game against a very good offense and some very good receivers. We've only seen RP in two games (basically), but we all seem pretty confident he's going to rock next year. So maybe one NC game is enough to call Coleman the real deal without risking jumping on the bandwagon.
Crunch I have similiar confidence in Coleman as well. I just think this is Jones' breakout season. He will take over.
And I got NOOOOOOO problem with THAT! :thumb: As someone said earlier in the thread (Tirk, maybe Mastermind) - Miles is in a great position with the depth on the roster in almost every position.
All I was saying is that it will take more then one great performance to sell me on Coleman. Don't get me wrong, I loved what that kid did in the NC game, but the Ohio State receivers were hardly super threats and their QB was hardly a world beater that night. I just feel more comfortable with Jones starting SS, with Coleman getting some substantial reps to show that he has what it takes at this point. The parallel drawn with Vincent was just showing that some good games will hardly show whether a kid will be lights out for the rest of his career.
I think we'll just all agree we got lots of great depth and the coaches will have to sort it all out in the end....not a bad place to be I think the one thing that this coaching staff really tries to do in recruiting in get players that are athletic first and foremost so they can easily switch to another needed position (Safety to LB, for example).
Their offense was ranked 62 out of 119 teams... 28th rushing... and 86th passing. He did very well, on a big stage, against a mediocre offense that was run based.
Unfortunately, the one performance is all we have to go by. And it's not you & I that Coleman has to show it to, it's the coaches who've seen him at SS during practice for, I think, 3 years now. Jones has never played SS, much less played it on a big stage & shined. I don't see anything to make you feel better about Jones at SS, other than him being a great athlete. Now, if the coaches let him take a lot of reps at SS this Spring & he does well, then at that point it would make sense to say you would rather have him start because he's a better athlete, faster, bigger playmaker, etc. I didn't get the parallel because JV was a rare case of a guy that regressed as a player. His play during '03 was fantastic & not a fluke. I don't see why someone would bother to imply that one of our players may actually regress when it is so rare.
