There is a direct relationship between recruiting & success, but Rivals can only attempt to measure it & it isn't always accurate. Our coaching staff has not forgotten how to identify talent or recruit, and I trust their judgement over that of Rivals or Scout. So long as our coaches don't feel like we're settling, then I don't feel like we're settling.
I'm never one to imply that a player's star rating is always accurate, but in general, a player that is given 4 or 5 stars has shown something on the high school level that garnered him such high ratings. In general, they aren't given 5 stars cause they're cute, it's cause they've displayed exceptional talent on the field. Now of course these players don't always pan out, but I'd say most coaches would be willing to take that gamble.
Many 5 star prospects are 4 star quality but they have lots of hype. Lots of 4 star guys deserve to be 5 star prospects but aren't because they don't have hype. "Hype" definitely affects these rankings. How high profile is their HS team, how high profile are the schools they are interested in, is it a tough recruiting battle, is there a good story line... These things don't define a recruits ranking, but they can sway it.
I'll take the "hype" then, it seems to be working out for us... K. Williams- 5 stars Early Doucet- 5 stars R Perrilloux- 5 stars T. Tolliver- 5 stars
Our coaches take the best talent they can get. They probably had all of these guys valued at 5 stars, which means Rivals had their ranking correct. That isn't always the case. There are plenty of 5 stars out there that our coaches don't agree with, which is why they aren't on our team. Our coaches probably had plenty of our 4 star studs ranked as 5 stars too. My point is that what Rivals ranks the recruits is much less important than how our coaches rank the recruits. Our coaches got it right with all the 5 stars you listed because they evaluated the talent themselves. Plenty of 5 stars haven't lived up to their ranking, but not any of Miles' guys. If we took every 5 star out there, lots of them would be busts. We selectively chose which ones we believe will the best. Do you see the difference? *Coaches don't actually use a 5 star scale, but I'm pretending they do for the sake of simplicity.
Everyone knows that coaches don't go to rivals and scout to look at stars, you aren't saying anything I don't already know. My simple point was that having a high rating on either of those sites means there is a good chance the kid can play exceptionally. Don't underestimate the rankings these sites give these kids.
