I had the great opportunity to see the LSU baseball game on Sunday. I haven't been to a baseball game since I was a young boy so I was a bit excited to go back. I regularly attend the football games mind you and love every second starting at 5:30 in the morning. Now I realize that the baseball games are far less people and I did see some damn decent tailgating going on I didn't really notice any excitement like on game days. Not only that but in the stands the people were all subdued and "serious" etc. I guess this just could be because I'm not really a fan of watching baseball, too slow for me, and this is just what I got out it. Needless to say I left after 6 innings. With all that said I was very happy to go but don't think I'll be back. My .02
true. i know a lot of people that dont like baseball because it is "too slow". while i dont feel that way, im not a fan of lacross. so rhans is right, to each his own.
Hmmm, I guess the "LSU, LSU" chants the baseball players were talking about, and how it made them feel, must have been in later innings. I do agree that baseball is much more subdued than football, but was excited to read what the baseball players were saying, and how the crowd made them proud to be out there.
couple of things: 1st, if you're an LSU fan, why do use a pic of Notre Dame's QB for your avatar? 2nd, baseball is a less violent sport, so the "hooligan" nature of the fans is not prevelant. Baseball doesn't lend itself to the casual fan very well. Most of what is happening out there is so subtle that unless you're looking for it, you never see it. That, and the best players make the difficult plays look routine, so it almost goes unnoticed. Sure there are going to be catches like the one Mitchell made Saturday or the one Ray Wright made in the '00 CWS CG. But what most people don't see is when Helinihi gets a good read on a fly ball as soon as it leaves the bat, then takes the right route to get there. He ends up making a normal looking catch on what could/would have been a double in the gap against a lesser defender.
i go to most of the baseball games and usually sit by the same people the whole season. so for me, i go for the baseball first, but when things are going slow, i got my baseball friends to talk to. it becomes a family up there
Slightly off topic but along the same lines of sports with subdued fans. I went to the Compaq Classic one year and David Toms and Phil Mickelson were playing together and tied for the lead going into the 18th hole. The whole crowd lining the cart path and in the grand stands were Tiger Baiting Mickelson as they walked to the tee box. It was one of the most impressive moments in sports fandom i've seen. I'm sure those golfers don't see support at that level very often.
LSU football and baseball are very different. You could, perhaps, as I've done because I've been so loaded, watch a game by yourself in Tiger Stadium b/c you can't find your friends in the Student Section(although I know most on here aren't students), but you couldn't watch a baseball game by yourself. Anyhow, going to a baseball game, you gotta go with several people so it's just as much a social event as it is watching the Tigers. At least they let you bring in alcohol into the baseball games when it's in a cup.:geaux:
Apples and oranges in every way. Completely different fan cultures. Baseball games usually have a much more relaxed pace and atmosphere. Football, especially SEC games, are like a battle to the death, and the atmosphere reflects that. Having said that, I couldn't disagree more with the suggestion that a completely packed Box filled with championship-hungry fans that was loud for everything didn't have any passion behind it. If you had gone to a regular season game, especially pre-streak, I think the difference would have been night and day for you.
speak for yourself. the only two games i got to go to at the box this year, i went to by myself. and loved it. i was able to fully focus on and enjoy the games without anyone gabbing in my ear!:thumb:
