Look, i agree that we played probably the best defense in the nation last night, and they shut down alot of people. But there is no defense in the country that SHOULD be able to shut our offense completely down.
Excellent point. JJ DID look good vs Ga Tech, and he DID look vs Arky even though we lost that game. The potential is there, and he showed some talent. Granted, it was probably difficult for the opposition to game plan for him given he had played little to none beforehand. In any event, I agree with others who have said he's being "overcoached" or it is being drilled into his head not to f*** up because of JL last year. The offense has to be opened up some, or at least run some screens, slants, etc. in order for him to be successful and build confidence. :geauxtige
I think a lot of people see QB's like Sam Bradford throw all over the field. Back shoulder throws, timing routes, seam throws down the middle. JJ has yet to show he can make any of these. Call it what you will, but the coaches know what he is capable of, hence the playcalling. With the two big receivers we have, one on one is not blanket coverage. There just seems to be no chemistry between the QB and Receivers. JJ is too tentative, JL is too mistake prone, and RS doesn't have the arm. And none of them have the talent of Bradford. However, Florida shut him down too. JJ is not underachieving, he is under developed. I was furious during and after the game and even Sunday morning, but you know what, God is good and LSU will be in the NC title hunt for many years to come.
i'm not picking on you in particular, but WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP SAYING THIS!? how do you know? the dude has yet to do anything for LSU except rush the ball and fumble a nice reception. i'm not convinced that he doesn't have an arm... in fact he has two of them. seriously though, he doesn't need to launch the ball down 70 yards down the field. QBs can be effective with short and midrange passes. :yelwink2:
Divorce us. Back to the discussion... I know there are enough statisticians here to pull this off. I would like to know how many passes went 10 yds past the LOS or more. I'm getting old, losing some memory, but I would guess 0...with the possible exception being the interception. That said, here is where I believe the problem lies. We KNOW JJ can throw the ball downfield. Unfortunately, we also know he isn't comfortable in the pocket. It is NOT coverage sacks. There is someone open on EVERY SINGLE PASSING PLAY. JJ isn't comfortable enough in the pocket to progress past his 1st option. He sees the 1st target covered...and he freaks. The coaches don't want him running all the time, so he simply doesn't know what to do. He tries to move around in the pocket, but after the 1st receiver, he NEVER looks for another. He just looks around to see where the hit is going to come from. Why don't they just let him play HIS game? Let him roll out and find someone. He did it in the Peach Bowl game all night...and he was GREAT at it. It confuses the defense to boot...since they suddenly have to concern themselves with the idea he may run. This will free the tight ends and the running backs as targets. Eventually, a safety would cheat up, and BOOM! Lafell or Toliver wide open down field! Seems so simple. They figured it out by accident last year, but now that they've had time to play with it...they got it good and screwed up. And by the way...AGAIN...these thread titles are just as stupid as the "fire the coach/coordinator threads.
I didn't notice. I was too busy yelling at the LSU O-line getting curb-stomped by three pass rushers.
I don't think (or desperately don't want to believe) that there's any of this "staring down one receiver to watch if he gets open" stuff going on. That stuff doesn't happen (or shouldn't be happening) at this level of football. Jefferson seems to be struggling with his ability to read the defense and figure out what coverage they're in and, therefore, which routes will be open. I've heard that there's currently no audibles in the LSU offense other than flipping the plays, so my guess is that each passing play is designed for JJ to make a simple read of the defense and then choose between 1 or 2 routes based on that read. It's highly possible that Jefferson isn't even trying to figure out the overall coverage that the defense is playing. He may just be watching one key defensive player in order to make a simple decision between 2 routes. My guess is that LSU doesn't have very many passing plays that they're using right now, because they're trying to keep it simple for Jefferson to remember that ONE thing he needs to watch for post-snap in each passing play. It's not that Jefferson is clued in on one primary receiver. He's probably zoned in to one section of the field or one defensive player in order to make his throwing decision. Of course, this means that LSU isn't using the entire field or its entire group of eligible receivers on passing plays simply because they're not able to.
I know this seems ridiculous, but that's something you have to throw out of the window when you have a QB who's this early in his development. He's not seeing the whole field and he's not even trying to see the whole field. He's dealing with pretty simple progressions (I can't imagine it's more than 3 steps at any point) on each passing play.
