THE GOOD 1. The defense is just fine and remains one of the top scoring and total defenses in the country. They got worn down a bit in the 4th because the offense couldn't keep them off the field. 2. Ladies and gentlemen . . . Kevin Minter has arrived. 20 tackles, 17 solo, two sacks and a forced fumble. THE BAD 1. 83 yards in penalties. No focus. 3 of Florida's 8 first downs were from our penalties. 2. More dropped passes. No hands. 3. More quarterback turnovers. 4. Poor pass blocking. I mean . . . really poor. Run blocking wasn't much better. 5. No effective passing game. The book on LSU is to stack the line and stop the run because we can't pass our way out of trouble. 6. General lack of confidence and aggressiveness. No swagger at all. Who are the team leaders? The world wonders. THE UGLY 1. There was a 15 minute time of possession difference. The offense consistently lets the defense down. Year after year. Chavis must be pissed. 2. One of thirteen in third-down conversions. 7% successful. We have been way too predictable. They dare us to throw and it has worked. 7. 25 carries for 42 yards rushing. Florida stacks the line and we run right into it. They know we are coming. They have more tacklers than we have blockers. LSU cannot pass and they know it. Everybody knows it.
Injuries to the OL and WR's that can't catch are the major problems on offense. I can give the play calling a bit of a pass due to the aforementioned problems. IMO, these problems are hindering Mett's development as a QB, so we are seeing mostly vanilla, conservative calls on offense. Others have mentioned that this offense as currently constructed, is perhaps better for a mobile QB. Why not play Randall or Bolden a bit, just for a different look?
In the 2nd half, Florida beat us 14-0 WITHOUT EVEN ATTEMPTING A PASSING GAME, and you think the D was good? Of the 37 plays Florida ran in the second half, 33 were runs. Only two of Driskel's four passes were directed past the line of scrimmage. So without even attempting to establish a passing game, Florida beats us (for the whole game, Florida ran 48 times and only passed 12, while we were 25 run, 25 pass) So Red, if it's so easy to shut down a team that isn't throwing the ball, why didn't we just stack the box and shut them down? As for time of possession, had our D been able to stop their one-dimensional offense, then our time of possession would been better Also, being that Florida went so heavy with the run, they were controlling time of possession...which is what LSU and Alabama normally do to teams with our strong rushing offenses I'm disappointed we went away from the run heavy offense that Florida used against us, and that Bama and us have dominated so much with Also, had you told me we would turn it over 3 times, i would have expected we lose
Well, if the defense would get their own 3 and out, they could rest for the next 3 running plays we run.
Amen on the Kevin Minter line. Dude was unreal yesterday. He is the defensive MVP so far this season. Where is Mingo? Anyone seen Barkeveous? You gotta wonder, and I know it's premature. Is Mingo's draft stock slipping? Montgomery is having a really good year, and will probably be gone at the end of this season, but makes you wonder if Mingo will return.
They did practically the entire game. They gave up 237 yards... What more can you ask of a D full of freshman?
and most of those yards came on a drive when we lost 2 linebackers, 1 of which was dominating the game.
Our offensive line got destroyed all game, so not much you can do offensively when that happens. We should have ran the ball more. our offensive line is better at run blocking. This is what Florida did...their OL wasn't able to pass protect well vs our pass rush...and the best way to negate a great pass rush is to get physical and run right at it, and that's exactly what the Gators did in the second half
