Well I'm just the opposite. I am in a "flood zone" but I can promise you my house WILL NOT flood. Coming down a dirt road road in front of my house that leads to the Hwy I live off of, you can see my porch but the houses to the east and west of me, you can only see their roofs. I am on the hill then I built up 24 inches in addition, when we built. I am insured for everything though. Full replacement of everything- even what's hanging in the closets.
Flood insurance in BR (at least in my area) which is not in a flood zone is about $425 a year. Last year it was about a $1 a day. My mortgage buddy got a ton of calls about their coverage during the flooding. 80% of them had zero contents.
I figured he must have had a bad taste in his mouth from something associated with Katrina. Not joking and not making light of it, sincere thought I had.
after Rita, FEMA came down here just throwing money around. because I didn't get water in my home, I wasn't even eligible for a loan, let alone a Freebie. but they did cut me a check for like $200 for losing the groceries in my freezer.
Those hurricanes and natural disasters bring out the Democrat in us all. I forget which one it was but there were doctors' wives in line for some freebies and they weren't affected.
After Gustav they were giving everybody a food stamp card. They only gave me $162 even though I lost more food than that. When I went to apply I saw a woman from the neighborhood. She had driven her new Lexus there and was dressed in all her diamonds and frills. She seemed embarressed when I started talking to her. I don't think she expected to see anybody she knew. Small compensation for the 11 days I was without power.
