I am very sorry to hear about this terrible flooding. I have not been watching much tv, and it just did not register. I hope and pray all of you and your loved ones come out of this mess in the best possible way!
I don't understand how anyone suddenly finds themselves in 10 feet of water in your car and you are not drunk, makes no sense. I'll be the first to admit, men are typically better drivers. If you are not down in this area, it truly is something you can't appreciate how bad it is without seeing it first hand. I've been helping friends/family the last 2 days rip out carpet, sheetrock and throwing just about everything they have.....this is in area's where there is no historical records of flooding ever occurring and some of these people have 6-8 feet of water in their homes. Just awful. Makes me feel very fortunate.....hope you are all high and dry and doing well.
heres some pics. some are alligator bayou, port vincent/freds, diversion at 22. ask if you wanna know where something is. these are just random. the loss is unfathomable considering it was just a normal rain for a couple days in most areas. didnt realize in central, some places got almost 30 inches in 2 days. well water up north must go south and the rest is history. im not a meteorologist but ive never seen what looked like a tropical depression form on land but thats what this looked like
this one is capt. troy twillie puttin in werk rescuing people in that badass boat he charters for bowfishing. Buddy of mine did that recently.
The National Weather Service says in Livingston and - I believe - St. Helena, the odds of 2 feet or more of rain over 40 hours for a given area is .001% In other words, this was a "1,000 year rain" event. For many of the other parishes in the area, it was a 100-year event. http://www.nola.com/weather/index.ssf/2016/08/louisiana_flood_of_2016_result.html
turns out it doesnt matter where it rains if its a lot and north of you. we had a 2 day normal rain. i think we got a 5,000 yr flood. I thought we were supposed to see only one 100 yr flood or rain. we've seen a few more than id like. they need to stop labeling it as such.
