Former Baton Rouge Catholic lineman 2 star recruit in the news –
    From the Tennessean (Nashville, TN)

Recruiting rankings tell just half the story
Star system offers glimpse but fails to identify all talent

Recruiting is definitly an inexact science. More important that the coaches are good evaluators of talent and they fill the needs of the team.

    Xavier Carter, remember?

Yeh look how Josh Reed and Hester were rated in High School.
Probably two of the biggest impact players in recent LSU history.
Sure there are some that hit (JR, etc)
Xavier Lee at FSU, and others show its a crap shoot.

Adrian Peterson was the only one I remember who lived up their hype...

I don't think Carter is a great example here because he left early to run track. I think that if he continued to play he would've been an impact player. Also the number of 5 star players that do pan out well is probably higher than those that don't pan out. In other words, more often than not, a 5 star player is going to be a very good player.

I was a five star coming out of high school and now I'm flipping burgers.

( I got five gold stars in grammar school too! )

About the only thing you can take from the "STARS" is how good of a high school player they were. Doesn't mean a thing at the next level.

I agree. Al Woods is a much better example.

I think a lot has to do with our society today and how we prop these student athletes up on pedestals. Not all fall in this category, but many do.

"You're rated 5 stars so you must be the cream of the crop and you're the best in the country." These kids get attitudes that they are the "stars" on campus and can do no wrong (see perrilloux bio.) ESPN live announcements, superstar campus visit treatment, knock down, punch out fighting between coaches. Way too much hype on these kids today.

Many of these 4 & 5 star recruits fizzled out because they were hyped already into stardom without playing a down of college ball. They don't give the effort of a 2 or 3 star kid so we may never see their full potential. This is why we see the 2 star Jacob Hesters and walk-ons of the world shine. They are out to prove they're good.

Remember back when kids announced, you saw their picture in the newspaper with the parents and coach signing their letter. No ESPN, no stars, no limos, no strip clubs. etc.
