Its valid, especially during those days when Miles was still winning. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I loved the quirky bastard but he just wouldn't get a QB. PM is sort of in the same deal, how much is not enough? It wouldn't hurt my feelings if he found a new gig and took the pitching coach with him.
yes and no. you first have to ask yourself who is “realistically” available? of those guys, how many are a sure improvement over Paul? (i realize there is no such thing as a sure thing, but y’all know what i mean) I have a lot more faith in Woodward landing a guy who fits the above criteria than i did in Alleva. Alleva would have just hired Ochinko and patted himself on the back for doing it before all zero other schools trying to get him. Woodward on the other hand i think will make the right call. Both in whether to axe Mainieri or not. And who to hire in his place if he does make a change.
considering who was AD at the time, it was a question that needed asking. I was one of the last holdouts. but my main argument was that Alleva needed to go first. the Alleva problem has been remedied. So now i’m a LOT more open to changes than i was before.
I'm never really concerned with that question. You make someone available. The trouble is everyone is going to want the next Skip and he probably isn't out there. That doesn't mean you can't look at records and job performance and find a quality guy. If you can coach then you can coach it's as simple as that. Can't get stuck in the tunnel vision of thinking he has to come from a top program or have name recognition.
The LHSAA has a pitch count scale: 1-34 pitches - 0 days rest 35--59 - 1 day rest 60-84 - 2 days rest 85-115 - 3 days rest Coaches are counting closely, both their own pitcher and the opponent. I saw a team from my area a couple of years ago forced to forfeit a district championship-deciding game for going 1 pitch over the limit - the other team called them on it. Maybe the scale needs to be adjusted.
i never said what size program he has to come from. just that if you’re the AD you have to know who is and isn’t both “available” and worthy of the job/as close to a sure improvement as possible. and that knowledge absolutely plays into the decision on whether or not to keep CPM.
LOTS of factors go into it now. for one, players are now aware of injuries more so than we were at same age. you pitched through “soreness” back then. now, you’re missing a few weeks as a precaution.
