Not quite true. In those days the final poll vote was before the bowl games. LSU had already been voted #1 in both polls and would have been national champs regardless of the Sugar Bowl outcome. I think it was maybe in 1979 when Alabama was already #1 and lost to USC in a bowl game and was still NC.
