That's a good read and is exactly how I feel about it. It's a mess. They created all these restriction on coaches to manage their rosters, and then opened up all these different avenues for players to leave, making roster management harder. Something has to give. Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately?) for us, we will not face the crunch that most teams will because of how thin we were in 2020.
In short The NCAA needs to allow you to add numbers for players leaving in the transfer portal. You can add a player in the transfer portal but there is a penalty for that basically, he counts against your numbers and usually leaves the next year. This basically creates a 2 year gap where that roster position is empty. Add to that when a player transfers out, you do not get a slot back. And this is why we see a roster of less than 60 during this past year. Hell Stingly traveled with the team to Florida just so we could play and have the min roster, even though he was hurt and wasn't really available. The situation is almost dangerous to the players and the NCAA needs to fix it. But it is self inflected wounds, and we got 2019 from it, The Goat. The only way to fill those positions is through blue shirts, someone has to walk on and pay their way for a year. This is why you are seeing a huge shift into recruiting Louisiana players in 2022, plus its a great class.
100% agree. They spent so much time thinking about how to benefit the players that they forgot the other side of the equation. It’s an absolute nightmare that won’t get solved until the public calls the NCAA out for putting these players in a bad situation.
This is also why O needs to just let this class sit at 22-23. I know he wants to add depth to compete better this year, but with how loaded LA is in 2022, a 27-28 man class could do wonders for the future.
Of course if they don't compete better in 2021 Oeaux might not be around by 2022. Better do whatever it takes to field the best team possible next season.
do you go in on someone untested at the collegiate level who may transfer or on someone who typically has some game experience who is looking for a new home? a new dynamic in a COVID year with extra eligibility... am hoping austin thomas is a help...
