There are tons of muslim foreign students, the best and the brightest all study overseas in Britain or the US. Most are required to go home, but really all it takes for one to remain is an advanced degree and a US job in a vital field where he can benefit the US. Essentially all it takes is $5000 to buy a lawyer who specialized in getting green cards for graduate students. I've seen it done. Such a lawyer has sent me an email requesting that I write a letter for a Chinese post-doc who worked for me in a temporary position and to describe him as essential to our important work and the overall good of the United States and he could not be replaced. He even went so far as to write the letter for me. All I had to do is sign . . . which I did not.

The point is that there are already laws in place, but it is full of loopholes that a good lawyer can exploit and there is apparently no Homeland Security watchdog over the process. If they are they are damn covert about it.

True, the 90% open-minded ones find it an enlightening experience and many want to stay and do the American thing. But, the 10% that are islamic religious zealots just find that it reinforces their preconceptions about our decadence.

al queda is not a soveriegn nation. it isnt like we are being attacked by Afghanistan or something.

then clearly the issue is with the school that cant manage incompetent kids walking in traffic.

i agree, except for the sending them back part.

anyways, the long term solution is that eveyrone becomes more rational and religion dies out.

I think the chance that radical muslims will become educated is probably about as likely as educating christians. I'm not saying that it's impossible, but by the time someone has invested that much of their life in a particular belief it's human nature to hang onto what you know because it's comforting, regardless of how much bull**** your belief is made of.

Radical Islam has it's hooks in poor, uneducated commoners. Most can't even read and have never read the Koran. That's not exactly the ideal candidate for an exchange program. You're better off investing in their country and improving the overall standard of living, gradually increasing the level of education generation by generation.

Paying cash is a red flag for scrutiny but cash is legal tender and must be accepted as far as I know.

and more from the amateur department....

i read somewhere this morning that he left his key chain which had his apartment key, and his get away vehicle key, in the rigged suv.

obviously, did not go to one of the better terrorist schools. or was a poor student.

so they are saying that it is our fault? perhaps we shouldnt station men in saudi arablia because it is in fact a holy place and god is angered? maybe we shouldnt help israel because we dont have the right to choose who our friends are?

if you are saying there are consequences to actions, that is not the exact same thing as saying we are to blame and deserve what happened. which are you saying?

if you punch me in the face every time i breathe, i am clearly aware of the consequences and eventually i expect it. but should i allow your lunacy to alter my behavior, restrict my freedom to act as i please? shouldnt i just beat you senseless and ignore your complaints?

You can pay cash. It only flags you for closer screening at the checkpoint. If he wasn't carrying anything illegal, they would allow him to pass. The real failure occurred when the air carrier did not check the no fly list and find his name. He could have already checked in before he was added or their reservations system could not have received the update yet, of course.

In the end, they found him and he was stopped...

The flaw is what would prompt them to check the no fly list? That would be his "muslim" appearance, which would be profiling, which Obama would term irresponsible and misguided, which would get the Sharpton posse riled up, which would...well, you get the idea.

Someone needs to tell 7/11 and all the stores that refuse anything over $20 bills.
