I agree, but it is just SO ugly at times. HE can throw the ball better than just about anyone... maybe ever... but he'll put the team in bad situations more often than not because of that.
See: various Florida games...the Tennessee game we miraculously won despite his multiple INT's, Auburn when he TOOK A SACK..... Agreed...not the brightest.
I read that as well. Gilbeau is terrible. Even when he's close to making a point, he can't restrain himself from being a tool. His point about Miles' allusion (was it really a comparison?) to last year with Flynn and this year with Hatch/Lee is a good one. There's really no valid linkage - Flynn was a very experienced backup. The rest of that article is just sh!t stirring. And it works. Cause here we are, giving Dildeaux the only real references he'll ever get - Message Board wankin'.... Not that there's anything wrong with Message Board wankin'....
I agree with you guys' assessment of JR and Flynn but I don't think it has anything to do with intelligence. JR has a problem with anticipating where the holes in the defense will be. He is most dangerous when the play breaks down and the receivers are running all over the field.
Exactly. Russell is a backyard brawler that relies on his talent to hit a random receiver and fails to truly grasp a playbook.
That's "intelligence" or the lack there of. JR maybe an intelligent person from a general standpoint but when it comes to "football intelligence" he lacks. Have you ever had the chance to listen to Ron "Jaws" Jaworski speak about the qb position? He's an excellent teacher. I had the chance several years ago when at the Oakland Raiders/New Orleans Saints game to talk with Jaws. He was standing on the edge of the field where the seats and the field met. I went down to get a sig and not ony did he sign my cap but he struck up a conversation about football. We got into football talk and of course led to the qb position. He said the biggest obstacle for a qb is grasping the mental aspect of the game. Knowing the nuiances of the game such as anticipation (which he specifically used "anticipation") of a receiver coming open before he comes open. He called it "football smarts" and said most qb's struggle with this.
This is a fair assessment. I doubt Russell will ever work hard enough to do well in the NFL. I hope he proves me wrong. I just believe that he thinks his talent alone will get him over the top. Think again.
I just don't understand why Russell gets the rep of being someone who was like a bad person or a bad teammate. I really don't. Is it because he went pro early? He was the 1st pick. Is it because he never won the title? Hell, he had a two-loss year on an even year, which are the tougher ones for LSU. I don't understand how people can say he never progressed and never worked hard when he got roughly 100 times better from his freshman season to his junior season. Sure, he lost at Florida and got cheated at Auburn. Find me a QB at LSU who has been able to reverse that even year jinx, though.
I don't dislike Russell and have no idea about his work habits. However the opinions expressed on this board are also prevalent in the media. Even his NFL Coach, Kiffen, said about the same thing last year and lately prior to the pre-season games. Kiffen has limited the type plays Russel runs this year to try and instill the timing necessary to become successful in the NFL. He has looked terrible this season except for the one drive where he was allowed to freelance. Maybe he can be successful with that type play but he can be awesome if he ever masters the timing patterns.
