Where have we seen this before? No, the truth is the American people are incapable of avoiding exploitation by the ruling class in DC. Not the same thing at all.

I would say, based on this comment, that some of the american people are starting to wake up. Seems like govt. is running an "early retirement program" focused on the defense contractors, big pharma, and the health insurance company execs. They have gotten rich without taking on much risk.

I disagree. The problem is Americans are more interested in Lindsay Lohan and Lebron James, than what's going on in DC.

Counter to what most might believe big buisess loves the liberals and government regulation. They are the only ones that have the ability to afford it and it helps them get rid of the little guy.

+1000 here. I thumbed through a people magazine waiting in line at a 7-11 the other day and thought "what garbage" I could not find one thing in it that was worth my time.

and the really sad thing is, that was probably the most intellectual magazine on the rack!

how much of the public's apathy comes from the garbage politicians have spewed villifying the other side? both sides have spent so many years telling us how awful politicians are, it has become a self fulfilling prophecy because people got turned off then tuned out.

several years ago i was out campainging for someone, handing out literature at an event. i started to hand a brochure to a man and he told me "i dont vote, i dont want to be held responsible". it took a lot of self control not to tell him his attitude was the problem. but slapping the snot out of someone would not have made my candidate look good so i bit my tongue.

Staying power. That's the issue. My generation is far too lazy. But the Tea party is an example of sustained civil/political discontent. Like them or not, they have the best chance of changing the culture in DC by putting heads on the block.

Well that's kind of what I meant. Fat people could run marathons if they put the Cheetos down. But they don't.

And we keep electing the same scumbags to congress (Democrat and Republican). It seems that for the past 30+ years Congress retains a 30% or lower approval rating, but yet, the majority get reelected. :insane:

America has become a product of our laziness and indifference.

this was why i made my poll about are you going to vote for your incumbent? seems so often we hear that "congress is all a bunch of crooks, except for my guy." it seems it is always the other guy or the other party.

i know people will disagree with me, but i remember when public service was a noble thing of truly wanting to serve your community/country. granted, i was young, but i remember my father talking about it as stepping up and being will to serve and give of yourself. just as i remember him taking me with him to vote, impressing upon me what a privilege and right it was.

    *sigh* how times have changed.

Actually it is just the opposite of sorts.
As much as you want to blame the private sector the politicians are as much of the problem as anything you listed.
Chris Dodd and Barney Frank and others got sweetheart deals with country wide.
Various government agencies bribed by private sector.
House banking scandal, politicians serve for life or become lobbyists.
Public service these days mean looking out for number 1, not giving a damn about the country and the American people.
