You're looking back, I'm looking forward. And I still haven't ruled out the possibility that Saban is partially responsible for Miles' early success. Miles has his positive attributes, I just have serious doubts about his place among the elite level of coaches.
no, i'm judging him on his body of work that is fair to deny saban his place as the one who laid the ground work for success would be wrong....just as wrong as denying that miles is to be commended for his turn at the helm.
I can't take this statement serious. It's not like Saban was coaching this team from Miami. He wasn't texting the kids in the huddle. He wasn't at practice runnign the offense or defense. It just wasn't happening. I can buy a brand new Corvette, but if I don't put gas in it, it won't run. That's not Chevrolet's problem.
I don't think ANYONE will say that Miles DIDN'T inherit a Ferrari with the keys in it. But on the other hand, I cannot respect the opinion that it was simply Saban's players that carried Miles' early success. Even the great ones like Dorsey, Hester, Flynn, et al...the BCSNCG year heroes...were coached under Miles for the majority of their LSU careers. None of them were significant contributers while Saban was here. - I'm not saying you said that, but just saying I dismiss that theory in it's entirety. If Miles were to leave in the next couple of seasons, whoever took over would be inheriting another Ferrari with the keys in it. - If feel like I'm looking forward...and I see a good year this year, and a great year next year. I've been seeing that for a while. All coaches...all teams have ups and downs. The reason why people bring other coaches into the discussion is to give another perspective. It's not unreasonable to look at other coaches/teams like OU, USC, Tenn, FSU, et al, and see that things aren't always peachy. Sometimes, coaching changes come to late. Sometimes they come too early. Sometimes, they happen at just the right time, and the program STILL slides into mediocrity for years. I just don't think a coaching change would do any favors at this point. In fact, I think it would hurt more than it helps.
I don't totally disagree. I think it could be said that Miles inherited a team culture of success and accountability, but Miles does deserve credit for winning a NC for LSU and having a damn strong team his first few years here.
I have absolutely no faith in this man right now. The last two years have been brutal and the first two games this year haven't given me the indication that the program is moving towards another NC run within the next few seasons.
