The good news is we only have 36 more days to have to keep guessing what we will see on Saturdays. Which IMO is still too long, because I don't know how much longer I can take reading the same stuff over and over again of some of the fan base basically making the assumption that our QB play, our O play, and our Coaching will not be any better than last year, and the other portion of the fan base having to defend half the players on the team and half the coaching staff.

Actually, the run game wasn't very good in 2005, JR's sophomore year (it was much, much better in 2006).

The averages overall, and for the situational stats, are very close to last years:

    1st down avg rush:
2005: 3.94(9 first down rushes for over 20 yards)
2009 3.61 (2 first down rushes for over 20 yards)

    2nd down avg rush:
    2005: 4.19
    2009: 5.13

    3rd down avg rush:
    2005: 2.70
    2009: 2.41

3rd down and 1-3 to go:
    2007: 3.69
    2009: 3.65

it's not xbox. and it's not the playground where you look at your wr's and say "go deep" and your OL and say "block for me please".

in that situation when time is running down, he needs a play and most coaching staffs have one or some direction.

this one did not. jefferson's job is not to go "screw you guys, i'm throwing it up" it's to wait for instruction from the sideline. and it was the sideline that bungled those last seconds and put him in that situation.

While the situational stats are close, the run game was better by more than double IMO.

My first reason being that Addi was just 79 yrds away from a 1,000 yard rusher that season..

Vincent also had just under 500..

Fast forward to 2009 where Scott had 588 followed up by willieams with 368.

My second point is that there were 4 games when LSU couldnt even rush for over 70 yrds. 3 of those we lost. The game that we won was Miss St...and that was a close one.

Also, in 2006, the run game for the team was only 200 yrds better than 2005.

In all, we just need more consistant play, something 2005 had over 2009. We need big plays and we need to be able to run for the first down on crd and short.

Though we did throw for close to 3200 yrds in 2006....

...[JJ] understands there are question marks about him, particularly with how inconsistently he threw the ball in the Tigers’ spring game. He knows there are questions lingering from last season when he looked hesitant at times to pull the trigger and simply didn’t play very instinctively. His message to LSU fans is simple: He’s been his toughest critic this offseason and has taken whatever steps necessary to become a better player.
    "
I wasn’t good enough, and neither was our offense,” Jefferson said. “A lot of that’s on me. I think I’m a better player now than I was last season, but I’ll have to be. We all have to be."
"I was too hesitant," Jefferson said. "
When it’s there, I’ve got to throw it, make up my mind I’m going to throw it and let my receivers shine."
    ...
    Patrick Peterson:
"In this league, it’s almost like you’ve got to do it once before you really get it down," Peterson said. "I’m sure defenses were showing him things he wasn’t ready for last year. He’ll be ready this year. I can already tell. He’s a different quarterback."

Sounds like he's working his butt off. Can't ask for anything more than that.

There sure are a lot of facts that support Clair's assertion in this thread. We have reason to be optimistic...
