i don't think gonzales has to convince GC of anything (if so, we're in trouble,) he has to convince the head honcho Les Miles to get away from that big ten offensive mentality he wants to employ on every down except for third and long. homie go long = tons of three and outs.

i'd love for the kid to have that chance as well, but if it does happen, that could perhaps be the worse thing to happen to this team offensively. we need a clear cut QB right now and if you have jarrett lee coming in and absolutely lighting up a lesser team (mcneese or ULM) when we could be using jefferson to work on things he is having trouble with.... i'm not sure that's the best scenario. not only would you have a rift within the fanbase calling for JL every time JJ struggles down the road, you may have a rift in the teammates as well. every QB is going to have his favorite target. maybe it's wishful thinking, but i think JJ's is going to be RS. they may have that synergy that is just spectacular in spite of any offensive woes or incongruences. :thumb:

this is what has me worried the most too now that i have had a couple of months to think about it. i just hope that our talent on defense somehow makes up for chavis' straight-ahead style of play. that, and the fact that he has employed a proven SEC-caliber defense for many of years -- i'm sure he hasn't not been able to accomplish that just by sticking with the same ol' same ol'. however, i'm sure the old guy may have a few new wrinkles, a few new tricks up his sleeves. just look at that secondary, man! what DC wouldn't get giddy with excitement with the possibilities?

that's just completely not an option. there is no way in hell that kid starts or gets any significant playing time -- if at all --this season. if JJ can't do it and if JL can't do it, they're not going to toss a kid with zero experience into the heat of the battle unless he has ULTRA quick RT and he's some freak of nature who makes awesome decisions -- if so, we'd be hearing reports of it from somewhere by now. barrett bailey has a much greater chance of getting in over ZL. this has nothing to do with wasting ZL's eligibility either because he's going pro after two years because of baseball anyhow. UNLESS he is such a gifted QB that he just sticks with football all the way to the NFL which isn't out of the question, just highly unlikely.

Don't get me wrong John Chavis is a more than capable defensive coordinator. You don't coach defenses in the SEC for as long as he has and be incompetent. His style is just different than most of us are used to. I think Chavis relies a lot on the athleticism of the player to make plays rather than by schemes or blitzes. I believe you are dead on right about this secondary. On paper and from a pure athleticism standpoint it is very impressive. Two things - if the defensive front can get any kind of pressure on opposing QBs, then LSU's defense could give opposing offenses fits. And, it has to get off the field on third down. We all heard it from Vols fans, "Third and Chavis!" Well, that crap has to stop if LSU is going to be successful.

I agree with this with every fiber of my being...

I too am giddy with excitement about the secondary...

Zach Lee will not go to the MLB in two years, because he will be a sophomore, and can't. Either he goes now, after his freshman year, after his junior year, of after his senior year. IMO, unless something bad happens to him, he goes after his junior year. I really feel like he would've already done something if he was going now, and if he's not going now, why come to LSU for one year...THEN go?

Here's what Miles said about JJ to the stuffed-full banquet room at Boudreaux's yesterday:

He expects junior quarterback Jordan Jefferson to be better. Miles said last season Jefferson held onto the ball too long ...
“We need him to trust his preparation and let (the ball) go,” Miles said.
“He’s better and more confident. I’m not saying he’s made all the strides he needs to make, but he’s made a lot of progress and had a great summer.”

I'm not disagreeing with you there. I'm not saying throw him in every time JJ has a rough day. I'm saying if something happened and Lee had to go in (God forbid, injury, etc..) then I'd like to see him come through it with flying colors like everyone thought he could do. Even the folks that talk down on him now days, were calling him things like "General Lee" before he ever took a snap. He had a bad year in '08 and they were wrong about him so now they hate on him. I'd like to see him prove them wrong again. But I agree with you, the team needs a "go to guy" for a QB and JJ without a doubt is that guy this season. I feel like he's going to look a lot better this year than last, bad mechanics or not.

First, JJ was never the leader of the field nor should a 19 yr old shopmore QB with all those seniors juniors on the O.

Second, Tim-Tebow or Bradford would not have made those mistakes last year because of the years experience they had. They also had Junior and Senior leadership mentoring and teaching them. A luxury JJ missed out on.

As far as the spike, it was clear the entire O went out onto the field not knowing WTF was going on, that **** was on the coaching staff IMO.

About the badly thrown passes, yea sure there were some, but also A LOT of dropped balls last year.

This brings us to question EXACTLY what did most expect from a KID starting his first year in the SEC?????????????

Point is, the mistakes JJ made never cost LSU a game. If you or anyone know of any, plz point them out..

Good points here, but I think the D needs more credit.

I think the major adjustment on D was players learning Chavis's system. Some might not put to much stock in it, but for that system, it relies heavily on players making the right reads and also, A STRONG D LINE.

D line was our weak link last year. Still, the D still held teams to 16 points per game. Which LSU RANKED 11th in the country last year compared to 56th in 2008......

LSU was 5th in TD's allowed while 119th in Field goals. This was the infamous "bend but not break we heard about". Though a lot of factors played their role in this, ranging from the D line, poor pass reads and the lack of O.

When we were in man, we were lights out, at least in the air. The D line has to improve and I am sure they will....

Chavis will have a better pick of players here at LSU and I think he will do just fine. LSU's D will bring hell once again.

Also, it might just be me, but our secondary, which is second to none imo, laid some nasty hits last year. Very fun to watch....
