Here's another criticism of the call: Video: LSU’s punter is the first victim of the overbearing, touchdown-erasing taunting rule - Dr. Saturday - NCAAF Blog - Yahoo! Sports :geauxtige
Honestly, I think Wing 'caught himself' as soon as he realized it... he didn't continue to prance into the endzone with his arms extended. Yeah he did it. And got called for it. But, if that's the case, they should call every single place kicker for field goals and PAT's as well, I don't have enough fingers and toes to count all the times in a Saturday's worth of games a kicker raises his arms to indicate the kick is good before it even goes between the uprights (therefore the ball is not dead); or a QB for pumping his fist when a pass is completed (whether caught and stopped or carried further); and all the trash talking/taunting that goes on. There was a LOT of that, both ways, at the WVU game. If they are going to have it then it needs to be enforced across the board. Even a coach raising his arms on the sideline during a run/pass could be called. Too much is left up to the ref's to interpret this rule as they see it, they at least need to be consistent and call ALL instances. As Carl Stine wrote at The Bleacher Report: "The NCAA can't figure out what to do with corrupt coaches, universities and teams corrupted by greed, but you better believe they are on top of the student-athlete who dares to enjoy himself en route to a score!" Please players, show NO emotion whatsoever during a game! Don't even SMILE; if a ref sees it you might get a flag. Next thing you know giving an opposing player a hand up from the ground will be considered a taunting gesture instead of good sportsmanship.
The difference is, Wing looked directly back in the faces of the two approaching defenders and taunted them directly. A kicker holding his arms up prior to a kick going thru the uprights isn't doint anything like that, nor is a QB pumping his fist after a big completion. Now if the kicker or QB runs up in the face of the opposition and does something like that, sure.
And to be clear again...I think the rule is too aggressive in nature. But as long as that's the rule, he definitely broke it.
This person has it exactly right. "There is nothing excessive about Brad Wing’s celebration on the 5-yard line. A punter faking out the entire Florida special teams unit and racing for a touchdown should be able to celebrate a bit. Wing opened his arms for a brief moment – there’s no direct taunting – and was flagged. Yes, I’m aware of the rule, and no, that isn’t breaking it." The word used in the ruling is "egregious". If I grabbed my nutsack, yep that's egregious. If I did the karate chop to my groin to portray a "suck on it" message, yep that's egregious. To turn around to look back and say "hey look guys I'm gonna score", no that's not egregious.
Again, there was no horsecollar. He was tackled by the jersey, not by the shoulder pads. Good no call.
correct but the cut throat motion by the same player should have been flagged, so that point is rather moot
Did you guys hear what happened when that ref was leaving tiger stadium? [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ub5pDHVVFzc"]Allstate TV Ad: Ref Mayhem - YouTube[/ame]
Not arguing the cut throat motion at all, should have definitely been called, I was with the booster club tonight and it's amazing how many people don't know what a horsecollar is.
