Need to go to the source on this. Obviously someone pushed to have this rule. Ask them whether this was their intent. If not, let's get some refs educated and fast.
The original intent of the rule was to prevent highstepping, backpedaling (Reggie Bush did a 20+ yd backpedal), and unnecessary dives/flips into the endzone. Its a stupid rule to take points off the board. If they want to keep the taunting rule in place, then keep it, but don't take the points off the board. I think that there are much more extreme taunts in college football than this punter turning to look at how close the defenders were just before he hit the goal line. In fact, they were closer than expected and he tucked and finished his sprint immediately. At full speed, you can't even tell what he did. When you go to super-slow mo, you can really tell that he grabbed his crotch, karate chopped it, sang one verse of Neck (LSU student style) and then flipped the bird. All that was just before he danced to Hammertime in the back of the endzone. Just one more terrible call in the ball game to go along with all of the times the refs didn't actually throw a flag. Considering there were 21 accepted penalties, and there were about 10 more holdings that UF didn't get flagged for, and all the missed/no-calls, the entire crew should grade out at an F.
The refs didn't have to call that. Muschamp was on his special teams coach's ass, not worried about some BS call. There are times to throw that flag and against Brad Wing wasn't one of them. If you wanna get technical, holding could be called much more often. This was a technical penalty that should not have been called.
Slashing of the throat yes but I didnt think it was a horsecollar. I thought he grabbed the neck hem on his jersey. I'm not sure though. I also did not realize there was a rule against the throat slashing. Other than sticking the bird I don't have a problem with gestures as such- AFTER making a big play on defense. No worse than the chomp or incomplete motion they make.
My problem with this rule is the application. Are you seriously going to tell me this is the one and only time a TD has been scored this year where a player "taunts" the other team? I doubt that seriously. SEC officials are horrible and like to use rules when they choose. They're never consistent and won't be disciplined, reprimanded, suspended, or fired for their mistakes...or intentional calls. Fortunately our 11 players were better than 11 Florida players combined with several refs. My concern is playing in the state of Alabama where "strange" calls always seem to occur. What phantom penalty will occur this year? What will the replay booth dream up this time? I really wish the SEC HQ would relocate. 1) Move the SEC HQ; 2) Immediately cancel the contract with the Birmingham Bowl; 3) rotate the baseball tournament instead of playing in Hoover, AL I bet Alabama is the least penalized team in the SEC again this season. Go figure. :dis:

Are the regulators really worried about the sportsmanship displayed by kickers scoring TDs? Kickers are't usually known for showing their ass on the football field (the antics displayed by Wing were probably some of the milder during the game). Stupid call by a ref. I usually give the refs the benefit of doubt, but this was crap.
