Starting last season, the NCAA began leaning on the compliance departments for their respective member institutions. One of their issues was the enforcement of Discipline via added work as a form of punishment. In other words, Coaches can no longer force a player to run steps or mandate the voluntary workouts. This was a primary and fundamental element that led to Auburn's downfall for the 2012 season.

Now coaches are forced to bench players to affect Discipline on some players, which is something many coaches are reluctant to do because it hurts the entire team. And let's face it, given the nature of the coaching profession these days, you can easily lose your job if you lose a couple of key games, even if your intent was fully justified for the betterment of your program. It's also why (IMO) that you see S&C guys beginning to use remedies like the one in the photo below .... because traditional remedies are being curtailed by the NCAA.

For example, a guy like Bobby Bowden would struggle to be as successful under today's guidelines because it limits his preferred form of punishment. Ironically, it is an advantage for those coaches that dramatically Oversign and bend the rules regarding Roster Management. They simply cut a player's scholarship and damage the player's chances of reaching the next level. For the players that need to be cut but still need a scholarship, a few coaches bend the Medical Waiver rules so that the scholarship doesn't count against the mandated limit. It's an advantage because it widens the gap between the cheaters and those that adhere to the spirit of the rule.

Hall of Fame Coach John Wooden had it right. He was frequently fond of stating the following in his Leadership workshops:

    "Use the bench."

Wooden tells coaches at clinics that the bench - and the threat of being removed from the game - is a powerful tool. "Don't be afraid to use appropriate discipline," he says. Benching a star can have an even stronger impact.

    Just my dos centavos ....

I'm all about benching anyone and everyone for anything and everything. Doesn't mean you lose your job, means you got some thinking to do on that bench from now until I call your number again.
