I don't really have a strong opinion one way or the other on LSU bringing in a transfer QB, but if they did I would not bring in Golson. Too much down side to Golson. For starters, if the rumors are true and he's looking to leave, what does that say about his character if he's looking for greener pastures as soon as he has some competition for his position? Would he come in looking to start, and then pout if he can't win the job? Second, while he's had some really great games, and has shown flashes of great plays, his performance during the second half of the season makes him too much of a risk given the other factors mentioned in earlier post (current players reactions, concerns about loyalty to kids already in the program, etc.).
Maybe so, but I don't think I want to see Miller or Golston coming in, because of the long-term implications. Harris has to be feeling pretty slighted right now, maybe even betrayed, for the way he was handled this year. If you bring in either of those guys, not only do I think Harris transfers, but every QB we recruit in the future is going to be thinking twice about the bed of roses the recruiters are pitching. Unless they have major confidence that Miller or Colston is the missing link to a playoff berth, I don't think they're worth the risk.
Not unless it's Bama. If it's LSU then it's merely a rumor. Same goes for defensive coordinators, recruits, head coaches, assistants and cheerleaders.
All of Harris' quotes including the interview he gave this week indicate that he is aware that he was not ready and that quarterback development takes time. There is competition at quarterback at any top school. New guys will be signed and veterans will improve. Transfers will come in and others will transfer out. I think it underestimates Harris to imagine that he is a crybaby that will take his dolly and go home if he must compete for the job. LSU cleared three upperclassmen quarterbacks out of Harris' way last year. It was a mistake and LSU was dangerously thin at QB this season. One injury and we would have been sunk. Les cannot be shy about signing the best quarterback he can find each and every year. If Harris is afraid of competition, he will never be the man.
Harris isn't afraid of competition, but you're right, he has blown up twitter a lot talking about his need for more work and doing what he needs to be the best QB he can be. Maybe he thought he would come in and just take the job, but reality set in and now he's ready to buckle down and do what he needs to get the job. Only time will tell.
Slighted? How do you think Welter felt? Should Miles have kept Beckwith on the bench to save Welters feelings? This is big boy football, if Harris is scared of competition maybe football isn't the game for him.
Big difference between those two. Welter got more than his fair chance to earn and keep the job on the field. I don't know what happens in practice or meeting rooms, but based on Saturday nights this fall, Harris didn't get a fair shake. But you're right, a good player shouldn't fear competition. Thought line continued below....
The only point I question here is the concept of competition. Any player in Miller or Colson's position is going someplace where he's been promised the job. If you've only got one season, why spend it anywhere else? So if a one-and-done comes in, what chance will Harris really be offered to beat him out?
The same chance he got last year. It's going to be another open competition for quarterback. Les knows that there is no assurance that a transfer will have the stuff to start here until he actually proves it. Bolton surely didn't get a promise that he would start. Mettenberger didn't either, he had to understudy Lee and Jefferson for a year. I doubt if any transfer would get some sort of "guarantee" that he would start. This job has to be earned every spring. What the transfer gets is a school that has no established quarterback in the way and a genuine need for a passer. He doesn't get any insurance that the other quarterbacks won't play better and earn the job.
