The defense would be struggling... Our offense is putting them into bad positions & our secondary is very young. The Co-DC's are taking a lot of blame, and fans are saying that our schemes are poor. The schemes could be better, but that was often the case under Pelini as well. It is the players who keep making mistakes & it is up to the Co-DC's to correct them. If we stop making so many stupid mistakes, our defense will be tremendously better. IMO, the main issue with the Co-DC's this year has not been scheming, but an inability to get the players to play with the passion & ferocity that they played with under Pelini.
im not sure you can differentiate one from the other. the confusion of the players/coaches before each snap hasnt improved any. in fact, most things seem to have gotten worse. the celebrating by the dbs when getting their asses lit up means they are fired-up but have the football IQ somewhere around room temperature. one thing we know for sure though; discipline is lacking. And thats attributed to coaching as well.
I have to agree. The defensive schemes look much the same as what we've been using in the past, but it's lack of execution and fundamental errors that are causing us the problems. Perhaps because of the co's being formerly position coaches, and since they're "coordinating" now, they don't have the time to put into coaching said positions... I've probably explained it wrong, because I'm no guru, but I think you guys get what I mean.
I think they are running Pellini like schemes but we don't have the experienced personel to do so. They are trying to compensate with blitzing but the blitzes are predictable. They are being picked up and the corners are being burned. We aren't getting the pressure with the front line but we really didn't get that last year either. Saban was so good at disguising blitzes and it resulted in heavy QB pressure. But we occasionally got burned. I hope Les goes out and finds that defensive coordinator for next year that revamps this defensive philosophy. Even with Pellini, I remember many games that his bend but not break defenses were quite frustrating.
there is a lot of miscommunication and a lot of blown assignments, etc... and that IS a fault to the co-coordinators as they are not communicating well among each other, and thus are not communicating well to the players. Even Miles has said they have to get that fixed. If a player gets burned because he is out of position, but he is only out of position because he was not properly told the play, then is it really the player's fault?
Thanks for showing up Clair. You just reminded me that Wade Phillips may be available after this season to become LSU's DC!
sounds like he's saying it's more of a communication issue. as in Jai Eugene doesn't know that we're in package "x" right now, so he lines up and play package "y" instead.
I'll probably get trashed for this, but I agree, but not how one may think. If anyone is honest, they would remember that after the South Carolina game last year, our defense gave up a lot of yards (466 to OM, 513 to Ark, 375 to UK, etc) and a good bit of points (43 to UK, 34 to Bama, 50 to Ark <--- that's 3 times Miles has allowed 50 points or more, even if it was overtime). LSU digressed defensively as the season went on, and it seems to be spilling over into this season. I don't know if Pelini was looking ahead to Nebraska or if people are figuring out this scheme, but as grateful as I am for last years NC, our defense, although better than this year's, wasn't really that great, at least not against SEC opponents. I think there should be a complete overhaul on defense this upcoming year like there was when Saban left. Let's do it again.
