That's incorrect. A touch for statistically purposes is when a player gets possession of the ball. A catch, hand-off, etc. Not if he literally just "touches" the ball.
dumb and naive. great combo. shoulda quit before you looked even more foolish. next time, listen to your elders.
You are right, i heard that on Ott's show this morning and didn't do my homework, Randle had 5 touches including the punt return that was called back. Shep had 9 total looks. 7 touches. So, that just makes it worse.
were 2 returns? or did he only have 1 and the other went out of bounds? either way, its far too few touches for both. also, i think we assrape vandi.
Actually, the fifteen sounded high when I heard it. We didnt run that many plays. Ridley got nearly twenty, so not much left for the others.
TT, he is right. In football, when the football touches someone but it is dropped (or if it's not touched but sails over their head), it isn't considered a touch for statistic's sake. It's a look. A touch is when a player advances the ball on offense through a catch or carry.
Now that I have a computer instead of a phone, I wanna discuss the touches...or looks...or whatever. Ridley had 19 "touches". I've heard as high as 21. Let's call it 20. How many plays from scrimmage did LSU run as a team? Ridley-20 He's the RB...gonna have more than anyone else. JJ-Probably about 5-7 runs and 6 incomplete passes. So lets call it 12. Shep- 7 Randle- 4...not counting the punt return, as it isn't an offensive play. TT- 3 or 4 Mitch Joseph- 3 I believe. Murphy- 2 So, we have 51 or 52 listed here. We only had about that many plays from scrimmage, due to the drives shortened by TOs and the roughing penalty allowing them to keep the ball. So Shep, although I agree didn't have enough "touches", did have more than anyone besides the QB and RB. I'd like to see him get about 12-15/game. In order for that to happen, we need 65-70 plays/game. 55 ain't gonna cut it again this year. If Ridley is able to hold on to the ball, I'd like to see him get at least 20-24 carries and a couple of passes. Add Jefferson's usual 5-7 runs, and you've got half the touches with those three guys. If TT and RR avg about 7-8 receptions/game, that gives them 85 or so receptions for the year. You aren't going to see that for both, but it would be nice if one of them got 85. I'd like to see the TE, whoever it is, get 4-5 catches/game. It was very effective, and JJ did a good job finding the tight end over the middle. In order to get Shep a few more touches, I'd like to see him get some jailbreak screens, maybe 2/game, and run some wildcat stuff JJ on the sidelines. Put him back there with PP!! Or Ware, but let Ware be the QB in that scenario with Shep as the pitchman.
I agree with this to an extent, because steadily moving the chains would allow for more plays. I would argue if he got more touches he could extend drives, thus giving us more plays. Without his 50yd TD run, the yds/carry goes from 4.5 to 3.2. That's not good enough to keep drives going. I like this idea. Ware is more suited to run the dive of the ball fake than Shepard is. Ware could be Ronnie Brown-esque in this way.
Not fumbling would also allow for more plays. To me, that was the most disappointing thing of the night...the fumbles. We have all grown so use to RBs that just do NOT fumble...to see both guys put the rock on the carpet was ridiculous. Any fumble or turnover is bad. But we fumbled on the 8 yd line, and then fumbled AFTER picking up a first down that would've sealed the game. That has GOT to be corrected. - Maybe I'm just crazy, but I think without the fumbles, we would've run about 60 plays. Considering the short field we worked with and the two quick strike TDs, 60 plays would've been good. We didn't avg 60 plays/game last year, and that was without any real quick strikes to speak of. We've got to find a way to avg 60+, preferably 65+ plays/game. That alone will put the offense from 112 to 50-60. I personally think we end up in the top 50 this year...assuming we quit turning the ball over.
