I remember Woodly and Ensminger in the backfield at the same time on some plays. I was pretty young then. I do remember watching him in the Super Bowl. Sad story.
I'll agree with you to a point. I can think of at least "1" I sure as hell wouldn't give any applause to. I'm sure you can fill in the blank.
So he must have died about 6 years ago. While Woodley was QB for LSU, my older brother was QB for NLU in Monroe and he just turned 50. For a minute there, I thought this was new news.
dont feel bad about booing him Tiger fans, he was going to end up that way regardless. some souls are just tortured.
It really wasn't that bad. It was only the local Baton Rouge people who were anti-Woodley. Both quarterbacks could play the game and they never really separated themselves for three years. By his senior year, most thought Woodley was the better quarterback. Ensminger had a better long ball, but Woodley was more effective. But Cholly Mac always played two quarterbacks, after an injury left him with no experienced quarterback in the early 1960's. Even Bert Jones had to split time at quarterback.
In 1976 ,when both Woodley and Ensminger were freshmen, LSU had Pat Lyons and Bobby Moreau at qb.By midseason Ensminger was starting ,Lyons was second and Moreau was moved to linebacker. We finished the year with a winning record and everything looked good going into 1977. Then ,in a pickup basketball game ,Ensminger tears up his knee.Woodley starts throughout the rest of their careers{unless you count that trickaration stuff where Woodley is at wideout and Ensminger starts at qb and they run that reverse option for one play } Woodley was obviously the more talented player, but Ensminger was the qb that brought us back from huge deficits on more than one occasion. On the road at ole miss down 21-0 ,and on the road at vandy down 15-0 are two i remember from 1977.After the Ole Miss comeback ,the headlines in the Advocate the next day...Steve E Wonder... Coach Mac stuck with Woodley, because he probably saw everyday at practice that Woodley was best, but I don't remember one big game Woodley had except for the Tangerine bowl to end his career.Perhaps being an introvert is not conducive to being a great quarterback,no matter how physically gifted you are. I do remember that most fans in Baton Rouge thought Ensminger was the better pro qb prospect and that Woodley would get moved to wide receiver. Woodley makes the Dolphins roster in 1980 while Ensminger is in the last cut with the Saints. In the last preseason game in 1980 ,Ensminger leads the Saints on about an 80 yard touchdown drive in the 4th quarter and I thought he was a lock to make the roster.
I remember Steve when he lived across the street from my cousin. His parents were very nice and even went as far as to support David when he was the starter. I seem to remember they were taken aback when he received less than full support from the fan base. So sad that he would remember more the bad than the good.
