Wickersham was a good, but not great passer. Pretty strong arm, but not as accurate or quick as Tom Hodson. He was thrown into the fire too early by starting as a Soph in 83, but became a good manager of the offense when Arnsparger brought Ed Zaunbrecher in as offensive coordinator and put the team on the cusp of winning the SEC in 84 (curse you, John Bond). The offense wasn't as dynamic as it was expected to be in 85--that team won with defense (the offense was totally shut out in the Florida and Baylor games that year) and I think Wickersham took the brunt of that.

Had a real good connection with Dalton Hilliard, who always knew where his passes would be. I remember watching him and Hilliard play in the 85 Senior Bowl. Three times on the same drive, Wickersham threw to Hilliard who was running a down and out 5 yards down the field. All three times, the ball arrived on Hilliard's back shoulder just as he made the cut. All three times, Hilliard caught it because he knew where it would be, because it had been in the same place all season. (At least, that's how I remember it)

He took the team to 2 bowl games, and seemed like a good leader. Along with Herb Tyler, I think he is underrated by LSU fans. Alan Risher is remembered more favorably, but Wickersham had the better numbers and seasons.

Well, when Uncle Sam sends you, you have to go.

Of course that means I have to try to figure out when the games start. I figure that the Florida game will start around 0430 in these parts. That is if Armed Forces Network carries it at all--can't tell yet. The internet is a wonderful thing though.

I agree about Herb Tyler being underrated. He is one of my favorite LSU players. Third and two, Herb WILL get the first down with his arm or with his feet.
