There will be a game in January in New Orleans between Ohio State and LSU, and the winner will have no greater claim to the national championship than three or four other teams that finish their season with wins in January.

There is no national championship game. They're going to call it that, for contractual reasons, but that doesn't mean we have to follow along blindly.

This national championship is as mythical as every one before the BCS was invented by that drunk guy in his garage. LSU-Ohio State will not tell you the best team in college football any more than Georgia-Hawaii or Virginia Tech-Kansas or West Virginia-Oklahoma.

I'd posted the other evening that I felt this would be THE most scrutinized NC to date. I think we should just scrap the system, make all the Bowl Games for fun, and leave the debate about who was "The best" to the fans cause it's almost already come to that as many years as it hasn't.

I went off on her just now...lets see how she feels after someone write crap about her. We should start a Column about writers, and just bad mouth them, call them everything just short of the bad words...Bet it would be popluar.

Calling someone a nasty name in print is not libelous (the exception being if you call someone a "liar" under oath). The defense for name calling is called "rhetorical hyperbole," and it allows you to call someone a "dirty pig" or a "son of a"...well, you know what...in print without getting sued! Gotta love free speech.

There are limitations, though. According to Neigher, any of the following can get you sued for libel:

Accusing someone of a crime.

Accusing someone of being incompetent in their profession.

Accusing someone of being in violation of public policy (i.e. a zoning violation)

or, accusing someone of having a loathsome disease.

The only way I could see this being a law suit would be the incompetence accusation, but saying Les Miles is a mediocre coach is stretching it and I doubt it would garner a favorable ruling under libel/defamation.

My Email:

Dear Jemele Hill,

Jemele Hill, you are a liar. And, of course, I don't have anything but rumor, supposition, and conjecture to back this up. I can piece together that you are a liar from indiscriminate facts about your life, your job, and what I think is going on in your mind.

We all know that Miles was interested in the Michigan head coaching position. His buyout proves that LSU didn't want to be left at the altar holding the check if he chose to move on. But what does all that tell you? It tells you that interest does not necessarily mean it will happen.

Even with Les' vague press conferences, and the fact that he never denied interest in the position at Michigan; you can't tell me with absolute certainty that he was sold on the job.

When ESPN chose to announce that LSU had "accepted the coaching position at Michigan", it was incorrect and shoddy reporting. Les chose to air his grievance before the SEC Championship to "clear the air".

Next time ESPN wants to send some "hired guns" to put a persons character through a ringer, make sure to tell them to hire a writer with talent, not a two bit hack like yourself.
