@red55, you are right about the big picture over time, but so is @BRETT in speaking specifically about the offensive woes, and even more specifically the QB. Outside of Mett's year last year, there has really never been a year where our offense is a formidable, balanced unit. People will argue the NC year in 2007, but I don't think our getting there had anything to do w/a formidable passing game. Yes, if you just look at the stats, we may have some years that have good numbers and appear balanced. But, the passing seems to come in chunks for us, and not really "balanced" or a true threat throughout a game. We are so often predictable that, for at least the last 5 years, we have to deal with the "8 in the box" defensive strategy game after game. People's frustrations are not about all of the positives you point out, but about CLMs specific, frustrating, chronic offensive philosophy. Is it worth throwing the cow out for some sour milk, I don't know? But, it is a very reasonable criticism, and given the time frame that there does not seem to be much progress, it is also reasonable to be suggesting a change at the top. Like Brett, I do not see us getting over the hump with the offensive woes we chronically exhibit, and trying to hang on to games w/a prevent style defense. Miles will get us 10 wins a year, and will represent our university in a wonderful way. Is that enough? Is that, at this point, greater than the offensive frustrations? I would actually say yes, it is enough, but I still appreciate and respect the frustrations about the offense. I would really like to see more utilization of our weapons at WR, and become more respected in our passing game.
I hate it when other fanbases actually call it that narcissistic reference. They are almost 20yrs removed from being THE of anything.
It is reasonable criticism of the offense. Les rates criticism just like any other coach. But calling for his head assumes that there is a better coach out there and that we can get him. How well has that worked for Michigan, Florida, Texas and dozens of others? Who will Nebraska get and what will they do if he's worse than 9-wins-a season Pellini. At least Les has won some championships. The same people who say Les will never win another championship said the same thing in 2008. I understand frustration and ambition, I just don't think it should make us be impractical and unreasonable. So would everybody. I simply think the answer is finding a quarterback with some talent and some brains rather than replacing the head coach.
To a certain extent both, all parties can be right, just with a different outlook on the end result. When you say the last 5 years, you must leave out last year. Mett when faced with "8-in-the-box" had outside weapons at his disposal. OBJ and Landry, if the safeties were up, pass, an if back, Hill, Blue, Hilliard and Magee. A very little reading of what was given by the opposing team. To replace Les, I often ask with who, with the higher ups at LSU, would you trust them to pick the right guy? Look at the Basketball, Baseball teams? Like I always say, if you are gonna replace a coach, you better have one as good of better to replace with, an like I said, I wouldn't put money on it. Les on the other hand would be without a job for less than a day. He might not make it out to his car without an offer. Good coaches, an yes, Les for all his faults, is a good coach, you have to take the good with the bad. Some just see all the bad an magnify it. Maybe I see too much good? Lets go back a few year, 1998, football rankings. LSU was no where to be found. Tenn, Ohio St, Fla St, Zona, Fla, Wisconsin, Tulane (Yep), UCLA, Ga Tech, K St, A&M, Mich, Air Force (another yep), UGA, Tx, Ark, Penn St, Virginia, Neb and Miami of Fla. thats the top 20. At least 3 or more of those teams will be looking for a head coach, an how many will be shopping for an asst coach? Right now, more coaches have turned down talking to Florida, they are getting names thrown into the hat, just not the ones they want. I went back a few years, but go back 5 years, one year you're riding high, the next, look out. When one good coach makes a move, its the domino effect, a coach from a good school takes another job, then the school that lost their coach, they fork out the money, looking for another. Bad effect to be in, most times, you never win. Right now Ole Miss, yep, Ole Miss is trying to keep what they have. Is Ole Miss a great job? Back when we had Curley, Ole Miss had Billy Brewer, then Joe Lee Dunn, Tuberville, Cut, The O, Nutt and now Freeze. Like I said odds. You think LSU has had a bad run of coaches? Think again. But we are LSU, we can get any coach and any coach can win here. Yep? Curley, Archer, Gerry D. all say, Hi! Once again, sorry to ramble on.
Hell, I don't even call them Miami: Hurricanes and anyone knows what you're talking about. The U belongs in the same category as the T for Ohio State.
Therein lies the rub. Pretty sure Les has a hand in choosing these QB's that dont fit the system or are too dumb to run it. In the end offensive failure will be his demise.
