Damn. Another sign of my advancing years. :sob: I had the good fortune to see 99% of his regular season and playoff games. I got to see quite a few in the old Mile High Stadium, the rest on TV since the Broncos home games were never blacked out. Damn, could he throw a football. I hate to think about the records he could have established if he had been surrounded by any talent until the twilight of his career.
John Elway was the main reason i started watching the NFL when i was a kid. He was really talented, and if he any semblance of a running game early in his career they could have won at least 2 of the 3 they lost early in # 7's career.
Yeah Elway is by far my favorite QB of all-time. Never has a QB done more with less. It's a shame he never had a supporting cast until the end of his career. He would have at least 5 rings instead of 2.
You're being a little too generous. The Broncos got their asses whipped by the Redskins and the 49ers in 2 Super Bowls that I remember all too well. John could have had TD, Shannon Sharpe, and Gary Zimmerman and I don't think he would have won those two Super Bowls.
Those two games were in the 14 straight NFC SB winner run. The AFC didn't even put up a fight in most of those games. The two exceptions were SBXXIII Niners/Bengals and SBXXV Giants/Bills games.
Ahh, but if you remember that Super Bowl against the Redskins, on the Broncos first play from scrimmage, Elway launched a 50+ yard touchdown to Rickey Nattiel, and the Broncos were up 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Redskins scored 35 in the 2nd quarter and eventually won 42-10. If the Broncos had any kind of running game, they could have gone to the ground in the 2nd and i think that game would have turned out differently. That year John Elway was the 2nd leading rusher on the team with around 300 yards. I mean hell, Elway even caught a pass from Steve Sewell that game. He was the offense.
I remember the Broncos "alleged" defense not being able to stop Doug Williams and Timmy Smith. End of story, end of ball game.
talk about a one-hit wonder. guess if you're only going to have 1 decent game your entire life, the Super Bowl is the place to do it.
